Add the trend of students from the Northeast looking to go to schools in the South to the already shrinking pool of students in the Northeast. "Mirroring a migration of Northern workers to low-tax states in the South, students from New York, New Jersey and New England are now also heading to Southern colleges — seeking warmer weather, cheaper tuition and a more relaxed atmosphere at a time many campuses have become political battlegrounds. What an incredible detective story! It looks like this mystery is on its way to being solved. Months of documentary research were needed to locate the site before excavation could begin, including maps, newspapers, probate and genealogical records, and deeds. This is one aspect of an archaeologist's work that is often overlooked, but equally important. Looking forward to learning more as new details and artifacts come to light. I have strong feelings about libraries, so this is a longer read: When I first moved to NYC in 2011 and did not have a job, I would go to the library FREQUENTLY to use their computers, print resumes, and use the bathroom, but also to just....spend time. It's hard to do any of those things in NYC without having a lot of money. Libraries are relied upon by many, for many different reasons. I can't believe we live in a world where we have to make the argument for the existance of libraries when we're surrounded by wealth and overabundance in so many ways. We show our priorities with where our dollars go; individually, professionally, and collectively. Our cultural shift away from curiosity, knowledge, tolerance, authenticity, humility, honesty, and especially empathy, is a truly disheartening phenomenon to witness and experience. All of those attributes I listed above, I learned from reading - and being allowed to read about other's experiences. My favorite series as a kid was called Dear America, that I of course got at the Scholastic Book Fair. Each book was formatted as a personal diary, written from the perspective of a young girl living during a significant historical era or event. I read about a girl living through the American Revolutionary War, a young enslaved Black girl in the southern United States, a Native American girl experiencing colonization, an Irish girl living through the potato famine, and so on. What an amazing way for a young person to learn empathy about people who have different lived experiences. Without realizing it, I was learning not only to have empathy for others, but how to start thinking about and putting language to these incredibly difficult topics - and all at an age appropriate level. Defunding libraries is more than just closing physical spaces, it's the harsh reflection of the seeds we have collectively sown. What's happening now are the outcomes from decisions made in the past and the continued chipping away of our societal conscience. We don't have much left, we cannot let libraries and everything they represent be chipped away as well. Speak up, write your legislators. #NoCutsToLibraries On a final, lighter note - the millenial in me is really appreciating the Saved By the Bell throwback, kudos to the comms folks at NYPL.
