"In what is likely to lead to more intense competition in the budget EV space here, Chinese electric vehicle company Leapmotor is giving final touches to its India entry plans, ToI reported on May 6. Leapmotor, which had talks going on with Sajjan Jindal-led JSW, will be following in the footsteps of its Chinese peers MG and BYD into the country. According to the ToI report (by Pankaj Doval), Leapmotor will enter India in partnership with the Stellantis group, which recently bought a stake in its global operations. Investment and entry plans will be announced by the company soon, the report said. The announcement is likely in the next few weeks. ToI said citing a source, "If approved by govt, this will see the launch of budget electric cars developed by Leapmotor into India, intensifying competition in the green cars space." Stellantis, a leading global automotive manufacturer, operates various brands across multiple continents, including Citroen, Jeep, Chrysler, Peugeot, Fiat, and Maserati. In India, Stellantis is represented by Jeep and Citroen, and it aims to significantly expand its presence by introducing new brands, expanding retail networks, and making substantial investments. The recent collaboration between Stellantis and Leapmotor on a global scale helps Leapmotor with the confidence to venture into the Indian market, industry people said. Despite stringent regulations on investments from nations sharing a land border with India, this partnership likely emboldens the Chinese company to pursue opportunities in India, they added. Stringent checks imposed by the government have hindered BYD's expansion in India, as it has faced difficulties obtaining approvals for its investment proposals, even with a local partner. Conversely, MG Motor, a subsidiary of China's SAIC group, was compelled to incorporate an Indian partner. This occurred when Sajjan Jindal's JSW acquired a substantial stake in the company, with plans to increase ownership to 51% in the coming years. In October last year, Stellantis unveiled intentions to invest $1.6 billion in Leapmotor, securing roughly 20% ownership in the Chinese budget electric vehicle (EV) firm. This move positioned Stellantis as a significant shareholder in Leapmotor. Additionally, the agreement between the two companies outlined the establishment of Leapmotor International, a joint venture primarily led by Stellantis with a 51% stake, tasked with exclusive rights for the export, sale, and manufacturing of Leapmotor products outside Greater China. "March 2024 marked a historic moment for Tata Motors as its micro SUV, Punch, claimed the top spot in sales for the first time ever. Recording a remarkable 61% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth, with monthly sales soaring to 17,547 units from the 10,894 units sold in the corresponding month of the previous year, the Punch showcased its growing popularity. This surge in sales was further propelled by the introduction of the all-electric Punch.ev earlier in the year, alongside the CNG variant, amplifying its appeal among consumers. In a notable shift, Maruti Suzuki relinquished the top two slots in March 2024 sales to Tata Motors and Hyundai India, reflecting the evolving dynamics of the automotive market. The total number of passenger vehicles sold in March 2024 amounted to 369,381 units, marking a 10% growth compared to the 335,976 units sold in March 2023. Following closely behind Tata Motors' Punch, Hyundai's Creta SUV emerged as a strong contender, securing the second position with sales reaching 16,458 units in March 2024. This represented a substantial 17% Y-o-Y growth from the 14,026 units sold in March 2023. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki maintained its presence in the top rankings with its hatchback Wagon R, securing the third spot in the list of Top 10 PVs in March. Despite recording sales of 16,368 units, which marked a marginal 5% Y-o-Y decline from the 17,305 units sold in the same month of the previous year, Maruti Suzuki demonstrated resilience amidst evolving market dynamics. The fourth, fifth and sixth positions were also secured by Maruti Suzuki's Dzire, Swift and Baleno with sales of 15,894 units, 15,728 units, and 15,588 units respectively, in March 2024. Dzire's sales increased by 19% Y-o-Y. The sales of Swift, which was the top selling car in March 2023 with 17,559 units, declined by 10% in March 2024. Baleno also saw a decline of about 4% compared to 16,168 units sold in March '23. Mahindra's Scorpio SUV claimed the seventh spot, achieving an impressive 72% Y-o-Y increase by selling 15,151 units in March 2024, compared to 8,788 units in the same month of the previous year. Maruti Suzuki again secured the eighth and ninth spots with Ertiga MPV and Brezza SUV with sales figures of 14,888 units and 14,614 units in March 2024 respectively. Ertiga's sales saw an increase of 65% and Brezza's sales saw a decline of 10% compared to March 2023. Finally, at the tenth spot, Tata Motors' compact SUV, Nexon replaced Maruti Suzuki's Baleno-based SUV, Fronx. He mentioned the "TVS Racing Electric One Make Championship" in reference to electric motorcycles, indicating that the company's development of TVS Apache RTE (Racing Throttle Electric) racing bikes was a precursor to what was to come in this area. "We may examine electric tricycles for freight and bicycles. We'll provide the whole line of items," he said. Electric three-wheelers, he said, have a great deal of potential and will expand quickly, especially in cities.
