🇨🇳 🇰🇷 "China’s Senior Tech Bags Long-term Order for Battery Separators From Samsung SDI" 🔋 🇸🇪 🇳🇴 🇨🇭 (Yicai) April 19 -- Shenzhen Senior Technology Material, one of China’s major manufacturers of separators for lithium-ion batteries, has secured a six-year supply deal from South Korean electric car battery maker Samsung SDI in the firm’s latest tie-up with an overseas client. Shenzhen Technology will supply Yongjin-based SDI with around 2.2 billion square meters of battery separators from now until the end of 2030, the Shenzhen-headquartered company said today, citing the memorandum of understanding penned between the two parties the same day. The quantity is an estimate only and the actual figure will not be bound to the MOU, it said. The pair will also explore the feasibility of business partnerships in North America, it added, without going into more details on future tie-ups. The EV cell cylindrical cell format 4680, with "tabless" design is relatively new and this just published article does a great job at analyzing the costs from a manufacturing process perspective. Affordable EVs depend on lower cost & higher performance batteries, and this is highly relevant information. At OneD Battery Sciences, we have been prototyping and testing many 46XX cells for our customers, with both NMCA and NCA cathodes and with SINANODE anodes made using SINANODE-processing of uncoated natural graphites from EV-qualified suppliers. By combining a very inexpensive carbon substrate (uncoated EV-grade graphite already produced at large-scale) and adding silicon inside the pores (with our novel surface treatment), we can demonstrate both the decrease in costs, the increase in cell capacity, as well as the cycling and charging performance and lower carbon footprint. This ranking highlights the major players in the industry based on their total battery output measured in megawatt-hours (MWh). Ranked List of Manufacturers CATL (China) - Leading the chart with a 34% market share, CATL produced 242,700 MWh in 2023. The company is a key supplier for various vehicles including Tesla Model Y and SAIC's MG4/Mulan. BYD (China) - Holding a 16% market share with 115,917 MWh, BYD has risen to the second spot, propelled by high demand for its batteries in both own and third-party vehicles. LG Energy Solution (Korea) - With a production of 108,487 MWh, this Korean giant commands a 15% market share, supplying batteries across a diverse automotive spectrum. Panasonic (Japan) - Once a leader, now at fourth place with 56,560 MWh, translating to an 8% market share, primarily due to diversification of its main client Tesla’s battery sourcing. SK On (Korea) - Producing 40,711 MWh for a 6% share. Samsung SDI (Korea) - With 35,703 MWh, it holds a 5% market share. CALB (China) - Produced 23,493 MWh, about 3% of the market. How to build a lithium-ion electrode factory in 9 months? My friend Duke Oh knows the answer. His 500MWh electrode factory in Eumseong, Korea came online this February, starting only in May 2023. Making electrodes is the trickiest part of battery cell manufacturing. Having a turn-key solution provider for your gigafactory is no guarantee that you’ll be able to make electrodes on day one. What is guaranteed, is that you will have problems making electrodes on your new electrode line. And your turn-key solution provider will not help you - the machines work, what’s the problem? If that sounds familiar, then it is better to get some people who know how to run an electrode line. The National Technical Committee of Auto Standardization (SAC/TC114) is soliciting opinions on the recommended national standard Recovery of Traction Battery Used in Electric Vehicle — Echelon Use — Part 5: Battery Design Guide for Echelon Use (Draft for Comments). The deadline for submitting comments is set for 10 July, 2024. As new energy vehicles in the Chinese market gradually enter the retirement phase, retired batteries can still meet the requirements for various echelon (secondary) uses, such as in low-speed electric vehicles, as backup power source for telecommunication base stations, and in electrical energy storage. However, issues arise in these echelon uses because the design of power batteries originally did not consider end-of-life applications in terms of materials, structure, and interfaces. This results in challenges in disassembling retired batteries, barriers to their secondary use, or complex and costly processes, thus hindering the development of the secondary use industry and leading to wastage of resources and energy. https://lnkd.in/gjhSVZYW
