Here's a scenario for a candidate that I'm currently working with that is weighing up two very different roles: One opportunity is for a BD Director at a well-established company, top 3 in their market. High base and a good total comp package. The deals won't do themselves, but there's a steady flow of inbound leads and a large outbound lead gen team to book meetings. The second opportunity is high risk/high reward. It's a lower base with high commission potential the total comp would be about the same as the first opportunity. It comes with equity and if you were to believe the founder it would be a close to 7 figure payout in the next 5 years. BUT - it's a new company in a nascent area. They've closed deals, but not enough that they can 100% say there is product-market fit. They'd be responsible for self-generating all leads. Which one would you opt for and why?

I'm no stranger to cold calling so when I recently spoke with an incredible CPM I proactively called a few small biotechs with open positions that matched. Some calls led to opportunities. Others didn't. That's all fair. One CEO however went above and beyond with his cursing (I was actually quite impressed 🤣) ... I thought if he could be this much of an A-hole there's a good chance there's a good chance his existing team might think the same So I tested this theory reaching out to the existing team. I suggested that most people leave jobs because of bad bosses and asked whether they'd consider a change for that reason. Turns out my theory was right. The CEO was like that with everyone and most of the team were up for a change Anyway...He still needs a new CPM and may soon need more because I have two of his existing team interviewing elsewhere 😂 #leadership #headhunter #recruitment

One of the most common reasons for leaving I'm hearing from salespeople this year is operational staffing shortages. Many service and technology providers in the Life Sciences sector over-hired in the post-pandemic boom. With the market cooling and layoffs occurring, there's a shortage of delivery personnel and project leaders, resulting in poor delivery. If you're the BD person whose name is on the next call or email, you'll likely spend a lot of time fighting fires. It could result in a significant drop, potentially to zero, in future business from that client. Repeat that story enough times and that salesperson is going to reach out to me. It's a challenging balance for vendors to maintain the right headcount in delivery while avoiding reckless spending when utilization is low. The issue has always been prevalent in the industry, but it appears to have become more common over the last 6-9 months. I'm interested to see what unfolds later this year and next.

They didn't just tell us what to do; they provided valuable insights into why each step is crucial in attracting and hiring top talent. Thoughts on IRA changes in the Healthcare and Life Sciences Industry... Over the past few weeks my team and I have closely been following the most recent developments pertaining to the IRA, HHS Price Transparency, and Medicare Set Pricing. More specifically, how these changes will impact both the healthcare and life sciences spaces. Over the past year and since the IRA was introduced, over 78% of therapies from pharmaceutical manufacturers across the US have been cut due to decrease in profits. It seems to be related to CMS setting certain prices for drugs in Part B and Part D through the Medicare Price Negotiation Program. There is likely correlation from the massive expansion in R&D during the pandemic, but as pharmaceutical manufacturers navigate market conditions, many therapies have been discontinued. On the Life Sciences side, in addition to cutting R&D efforts, my clients have also been concerned with small molecule IP and many are looking to bring on talented IP Counsels that will focus on patent licensing, prosecution and protection. Attorneys with 340B, Drug Pricing, Medicare, and Government Program experience are also extremely desirable for my larger clients. On the Healthcare side, many large payors are seeking attorneys who have experience working with Pharmacy Benefit Managers, The Prescription Drug Program and CMS Rules pertaining to reimbursement. The new pricing framework also seems to align more closely with a shift towards value-based care which has been consistent with what we are seeing in the market. In the coming weeks there should be more clarity on some of the regulatory changes and how they affect the industry. On a monthly performance check-in with one of my partners, the hiring manager mentioned that they just secured a new project (amazing!) and with that we need to start gearing up to scale. In that conversation they also noted that the remainder of their budgeted 2024 hires will be contract-to-hire roles through us 💡 Why? ⬇ They presented the below reasons... 1. The partnership over the years has been successful and collaborative, and as a result of that their lab has directly seen the benefits 2. The candidates we have hired have been incredible. No credit to our own on this one but it's never lost on us who we work with. We are extremely grateful for the partnerships we've built and are honored to be able to work with such incredible, passionate people/talent and that care about the work they do. 3. Our processes have made it incredibly efficient for them to hire and have been cost effective. How? ➡ Their current internal hiring process from start to finish takes a minimum of 90 days which puts them behind in projects (and that's assuming the candidates have no other offers and accept).
