  • Migrating Mixed-Signal Design Verification from Cell-Based Netlister (CBN) to Unified Netlister (UNL)

CDNLive Silicon Valley 2015 Mixed Signal Best Paper Award

With ever increasing complexity of mixed-signal designs and the more widespread use model of mixing different languages like System Verilog/ Verilog/ Verilog AMS, the Cell-Based netlister (CBN) was falling short on speed, reproducibility and support of the latest capabilities. With ever increasing complexity of mixed-signal designs and the more widespread use model of mixing different languages like System Verilog/ Verilog/ Verilog AMS, the Cell-Based netlister (CBN) was falling short on speed, reproducibility and support of the latest capabilities. In order to maximize productivity and minimize the turn-around-time for designs, there was a need for us to find a better solution. We tried migrating to the OSS netlister, however we encountered problems which stopped us from achieving that goal. The new Unified netlister (UNL) was exactly what we needed. It resolved the issues that we had with both the CBN and the OSS netlister. It greatly improves speed, repeatability, and brings the analog flow much closer to the irun based digital simulation flow. This paper will discuss some of the shortcomings of CBN, steps to migrate to UNL (e.g, config view and simulation state changes), highlight pitfalls to be avoided and conclude with some bench marking and future plans.
