I usually don't post much on LinkedIn, but between ChatGPT's flirty Her-inspired voice and Butker's commencement speech last week (same same but different), I'm a bit fired up. Meta recently announced the formation of a new AI Advisory Council. The kicker? This group, tasked with advising one of the world’s most powerful tech companies on its AI strategies, is composed entirely of white men aged 30 to 40. This decision comes just months after OpenAI faced criticism for its lack of diversity following Altman’s departure. "There are only four people; why does it matter!" "They're very smart and successful white men; I'm sure they know what they're talking about." "Why is it always about race / gender!" Or, [insert any comment from Tech Crunch's tweet on this story: https://lnkd.in/gAAf_eFn]. ICYMI: BIPOC and women are markedly underrepresented in tech, especially in leadership roles. And, diversity in decision-making—especially at this new frontier of very influential tech—is essential (underlined and in bold) for creating inclusive advancements that serve the whole, not the few. DEI isn’t just a "trend" or an option; it’s imperative for fair and equitable innovation. Technology (or anything, really) built by a homogenous group risks perpetuating biases and failing everyone else. What happens when a homogenous group makes a product? They make it primarily for people who think and behave the same way. Many, including the World Economic Forum, argue that AI is already failing women. From the inherent sexism of personal assistants and chatbots (which are predominantly female) to women being targeted by AI-generated explicit content, it's clear that AI has—and will continue to have—serious ramifications for women. BIPOC have also faced significant negative consequences, including bias in facial recognition (leading to wrongful arrests and privacy violations), discrimination in hiring algorithms, healthcare disparities, and more. By ensuring diverse voices are heard and included in the development process, we can build technology that is more effective, more inclusive, and more beneficial to society as a whole. But without them, AI will inevitably reinforce existing inequalities and fail to serve anyone who doesn't fit the homogenous mould. Anyway, a big shout out to my ladies (and BIPOC) in STEM. Your work is so important, and I hope you feel seen and appreciated every day.

I recently had the privilege of representing Microsoft Shopping at Rakuten Optimism 2024 and came away with a lot of positive outcomes. To me, conferences are a lot about creating meaningful connections and learning. It was great to connect with our brands, agencies, partners and other publishers and learn from their journey on building value in the affiliate marketing ecosystem. Here are the 3 things I learned that I want to share 1)     Don’t treat what others have tried and failed as mistake – instead you can still attempt to do it using what they learned 2)     You learn a lot from those who compete in the same space. At the start of the year I came across an IG clip created by an NYU business professor, Suzy Welsh, where she suggests 4 things - 4 "R"s we all need to do no matter what career we choose for ourselves: "1. Reskilling: the economy is changing very quickly. We need to constantly reskill ourselves. 2. Irregular relationships: when industries go down, they go down together. We all need fairly irregular relationships outside of our industry. 3. Relevance: stay current about our company, our industry, and the economy. 4. Resilience: grit + forgiveness, including forgiving ourselves for not doing something right." I shared the clip with a close friend and she asked 'What have you done recently to reskill yourself?' I took a hard look and realized that I had been hard at work the last few years and didn't intentionlly create the space and dedicate time to invest in myself. That changed this May when I took the 'AI in Marketing' class from ELVTR. The thoughtfully-planned program covered everything from AI-driven competitive analysis, market research & segmentation, performance marketing, financial forecasting, brand building & measurement to scalable creative production and enhancing customer experience by leveraging AI tools & technologies. The coursework was hard but the results were very rewarding. We all know AI is changing how we work, and I truly believe in the near future, most of our jobs will not be replaced by AI but by someone else who knows how to use the technology better. All that is to say, we need to adapt, QUICKLY. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from our wonderful instructor Nicolas Darveau-Garneau and alongside so many talented fellow marketers. Your creativity, curiosity and experience inspire me to continually advance myself. I now have 'Prompt Engineering' from Coursera and 'Building AI products' from Reforge queued up. In my first week at Google in 2018, a staff SWE shared some wisdom about succeeding at the company (and in life). “Instead of what you should pay attention to, figure out what to tune out.” It took a few weeks for me to recognize how right he was. As a new person on the team, you will naturally get involved in the right conversations. Your manager and colleagues are incentivized to get you looped in so that you take the work off their plate. The problem is you will also get roped into meetings, conversations, announcements, email distribution lists that are low priority and irrelevant (for you). Before long, I was inundated with information from every direction, and was added to numerous meetings where I didn't contribute. If this happens to you, you’re not alone. Doing these 3 things helped me to take back control of how I spend time at work. 1️⃣ 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 - Literally track and review your calendar judiciously over a month to see how much time you’re spending on different tasks. - Decide where you will take time back. That decision can be a combination of what you personally find energizing vs. draining, and what is objectively impactful vs. wasteful. 2️⃣ 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 / 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 / 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 - Importantly, communicate clearly to the meeting owner / key participants about why you will no longer attend. - If relevant, let them know (or decide together) what will take its place (e.g. another person in your place, async updates, less frequent cadence, merging meetings). 3️⃣ 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 "𝐧𝐞𝐰" 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 - Taking time back means you have a better sense of where you don't want to spend time. Now you need to be deliberate about re-allocating that time. - There is no one-size-fits-all here. You have to determine what the most impactful use of your time is, and why. If you don't, others will decide for you, and you'll likely end up where you started, with a calendar full of irrelevant meetings. --- Right now, you may not feel inundated with your schedule, and that's great! However, getting in a habit of regularly auditing and optimizing how you spend time can be just as useful a preventative measure as a corrective measure. Do it. Future you will be grateful.

Today, we’re announcing: 📌 Pinterest Ad Labs: a new program for select brands to test early versions of Gen AI and creative tools for advertisers. Where did tech talent relocate in the wake of the pandemic? I helped crunch the numbers using our in-house Beacon AI system to generate our annual SignalFire State Of Talent report. Here are some of the most interesting revelations: 1. NYC is the top destination in for tech workers relocating in the past year. SF remains top though for tech talent overall, with a large lead that’s unthreatened by recent gains by other cities. Meanwhile, Austin is on the rise with the biggest percentage growth of its tech headcount. 2. Gen Zs are both slower to ascend to managerial positions and more likely to switch jobs in the early years of their career than either Millenials or Gen X were. 3. Data roles have an increasing engineering focus, with Data Engineering and ML Engineer titles increasingly usurping Data Scientist ones. All this and more inside. Instacart isn’t the secret it used to be. It’s helped grow some real brand giants: Liquid Death, Chomps, Good Culture, Applegate… But Instacart isn’t the only show in town. DoorDash is making a run for retail delivery. And it’s Ad platform is starting to catch fire. Here’s how each platform shakes out for brand growth. INSTACART. Pros: -> Sophisticated analytics. -> Allows for customer retargeting. -> Growing rapidly across *all retailer types*. -> Advanced placement and targeting methods. -> Largest share of Delivery, 3rd in Online Grocery. -> You can “back into” some retailer specific targeting. Cons: -> Competition is slowly increasing. -> No retailer-specific sales reporting. -> Can’t negate poor performing search terms. -> Campaign AI is inefficient (like most ad platforms). DOORDASH. Pros: -> Ultra high intent platform. -> Extremely low brand competition. -> Much larger share of c-store delivery. -> Massive potential from restaurant customer base. Cons: -> Less sophisticated analytics. -> Fewer available Ad Placement Types. -> Only 10% of Grocery Delivery Market. -> Can’t negate poor performing search terms. So which platform is best for growing retail velocity? This is another case of “it depends”. For most brands, it’s probably Instacart. But retail media is not a one-solution game. We work with a brand that is using nine retail media platforms. And they’re the fastest growing brand in their category.
