Very excited to share that I've completed an enriching Natural Language Processing(NLP) course at UC Berkeley this quarter(Part of my Masters degree)! Delving into the intricacies of language comprehension and analysis has been truly enlightening. As we explored concepts like information extraction, sentiment analysis, and machine translation, I couldn't help but reflect on the significance of attention in NLP. Indeed, "Attention is all you need"(Transformer based model) proved to be a guiding principle throughout our studies. This past weekend, Hannah and I hosted a resume workshop in partnership with Rice University. We had a great time learning from students as to what their primary challenges were in the tech job market. We learned that students struggled primarily with 3 things: 1️⃣ Outcomes > output 🚀 The goal of a product designer, manager, etc. is not to deliver a project on time -- that's table stakes. The goal is deliver an outcome -- that's much harder. Typically, you showcase an outcome by sharing how metrics improved. The challenge often posed is, "My internship wasn't long enough to measure the impact." You can circumvent this challenge by sharing the impact sizing. If you don't have an impact sizing to share, the chances are that the problem was not well-defined because you didn't know what to measure. 2️⃣ Hope is not a strategy 🤲 We shared with students that for a job posting with 100+ resumes, you might get <10% resumes that actually fit the job description. Thus, tailoring your resume is extremely important to avoid the graveyard of instant rejections. The challenge often posed is, "Tailoring resumes takes too much time." You can circumvent this challenge by creating a "base template" resume by industry (ex: healthcare) and type of role (ex: UX vs. UI, core vs. growth PM), and slightly tweaking for each role. If it's take you longer than a couple minutes to tailor your resume after creating a base template, your process is most likely broken. 3️⃣ What is my calling? 🤔 Students voiced that they'll apply for jobs at random, but deep down, they wanted to have a stronger "why." This topic was out-of-scope for the workshop, but a topic we'd like to address further down the road. The Rice students invited us back for another workshop, so seems like we were helpful. If anyone would like for Hannah and me to hold another workshop, we are happy to do so!

Imposter Syndrome Early in my PhD, I had a few moments when I was amazed by the intelligence of some of my peers. I remember one occurrence quite clearly. During the PhD selection process, when I first visited CU Boulder, the visiting students were given a tour of the different labs. During one of the tours, we were taken to an optics lab where a graduate student and a professor talked about their research. There were exchanges between them and the other potential students. I remember vividly having moments of self-doubt as I experienced the discussions between my peers, the currently enrolled graduate students, and the faculty, where I didn’t have the foggiest idea what they were talking about. These other students just seemed to understand the topic; they were answering and asking questions that, for the life of me, I had no idea how to even process. I remember thinking, how on earth am I going to succeed around people who are clearly way ahead of me on the intelligence scale? I have realized as I have gotten older that we are all unique in our gifts and abilities. Each of us is granted a set of skills that makes us the ideal person to solve a particular problem or confront a specific challenge. I am by no means the smartest, most knowledgeable, or most skilled at any given technology, topic, or technique, but I don’t have to be. Some of us have persistence, some of us have charisma, some of us have creativity, and some of us just have raw book smarts. Regardless, none of us bring the same combination of experiences and skills to the table. Our competence is most often not derived from the performance of a single skill, ability, or experience but more often from the confluence of all of them.

Longhorn Electric Racing Is Building the Future of Electric Vehicles with Cadence Tools. Longhorn Electric Racing is a student-run racing team at the University of Texas, Austin. Not only are they building the best race cars, but they’re also building the future generation of engineers. Their electric vehicle team is one of their most recent teams, founded in 2016. Some of the challenges they face in designing an electric car are making sure it can go as fast as possible, making sure it has sufficient cooling, and making models effectively. 🚀 I recently joined the LLM Zoomcamp, and it has been incredibly interesting! In the first week, I learned a lot about LLMs and RAGs. Although I enrolled a bit late and missed Homework 1, I managed to catch up and complete it. ✅ In Week 2, I explored Elastic Search and various LLM models like FLAN-T5, HuggingFace, Phi3, and Mistral, and running Ollama on a CPU. The course is easy to understand, thanks to @Alexey Grigorev's excellent teaching using diagrams, which makes grasping the concepts much easier for me. 🖼️ I successfully completed Homework 2 and am excited to dive into Week 3's concepts. 📚I found the best way to learn—with hands-on practice. Recently I applied to USCIS for my work visa. USCIS returned me a receipt with a number which I can use to track the status of my application. Since the day I received that number, I might have checked the status for at least 200 times. I would open their website, enter the number, check the status and go back to what I was doing before. After a time I realized that I have become obsessed with checking the status, and would feel so out of control when status doesn’t change. To solve this, I built a tool that will send me status of my application over an email every day. Now I just spend a second to look at the email in the morning and will not worry about my status updates throughout the day. I'm excited to present next Monday, May 13, at 12:00 HST in the "AI and Interaction Design" session at #CHI2024. We explore how a proactive conversational AI assistant can support UX evaluators in conducting usability analysis. We used ChatGPT to automatically provide suggestions at key moments—before, during, and after spotting potential usability problems. O-1 (and EB-2 NIW) for Software Engineers. Regarding GitHub contributions. The temporary visa category of O-1 is rightfully getting more attention given the challenges of the H-1B cap. More F-1 students are looking at an O-1 as a possible alternative to H-1B. This is particularly important for Indian and Chinese born immigrants who cannot realistically self-petition for a green card and get any work authorization given the long waits of the Visa Bulletin cut-off dates. An O-1 requires employer sponsorship and employers sometimes dissemble in their consideration of O-1. This is particularly true at large employers who use certain law firms that are really efficient at pushing everyone into H-1B and PERM. One mistake I see is that people wait until AFTER losing the H-1B cap lottery their last time and then scrambling to try for O-1. In my view this is 'too late' - and what you want to be doing is preparing your O-1 profile (and maybe explicitly your O-1 case) during your F-1 OPT and STEM OPT period so if you are unlucky in the H-1B cap lottery, you are ready to go for O-1. A lot of F-1 students study software engineering and data science, which were probably the right fields to choose 10 years ago and maybe 5 years ago but maybe not the right fields for the 2024 job market. Besides the challenging job market, software engineers and data scientists often face headwinds in trying to get approved for O-1 as their fields are not necessarily well-suited for the O-1 criteria. [A link to the official USCIS policy manual for O-1 is in the first comment below]. Contributions to GitHub can possibly be one way to demonstrate subject matter expertise, of relevance to O-1 but also EB-2 NIW and potentially even EB-1A. In general the challenge faced by software engineers and data scientists and data analysts is that they are hyper-focused on making their employers more efficient and profitable. Those are very useful activities for any organization but those things may not necessarily be useful in meeting the O-1 criteria, or showcasing an endeavor of national importance for EB-2 NIW. Besides 'waiting too long' on F-1 OPT and STEM OPT, and besides 'studying the wrong thing' (which no one really wants to hear) -- the other mistake I am seeing is people moving into Day 1 CPT and thinking this solves a problem. Day 1 CPT is a band-aid. It buys you another chance at the lottery but next year's odds in the lottery will also be bad. What people need to be doing is using their time to get out of the H-1B cap lottery nonsense and the only way to do that (other than moving abroad and returning on L-1, or maybe marrying a US citizen) is trying to build a profile for O-1. I do think Day 1 CPT is a possible short-term solution for people but way too many people are pursuing it now and the odds of winning the H-1B cap lottery next year will be as bad or worse than this year. You need to do something much more substantial. ###
