The story chronicled the plight of soon-to-be-released prisoners as well as returning citizens as they navigated a world where the social safety net had been pulled out from under them. For five months, I visited a state prison's classrooms and followed a small group of men as they learned coping mechanisms and life skills; I also followed several post-release as they grappled with substance use disorder, illiteracy and a daunting search for housing. Some ended up back in the system after a short time. Others disappeared completely.
