How can you reduce your reliance on single-occupancy vehicles?
Promoting active transport is one of the best things to do for the health of people, cities, and the planet. This starts by creating a complete network of streets that are safe for walking and rolling. 1) “no car streets” - merchant corridors, school streets, city hall, the library. Anywhere that you can envision people strolling or a public square, take the opportunity to exclude motor vehicles. Incorporate transit/paratransit + golf carts to maintain access for those who can’t walk or bike. 2) make all neighborhood streets “slow car streets” by placing concrete planters every few blocks to maintain access, but drivers can’t get up to speed. 3) use concrete/k-rail to create protection on arterials. “If you build it, they will come.”

What are the best ways to encourage multi-modal transportation?
We must accept that personal motor vehicles are NOT the answer. We are in the midst of a global climate crisis, yet oil production and consumption keeps increasing. In the USA we see at least 45K deaths due to traffic violence every year and pedestrian deaths have increased at an alarming rate. Every day 20 Americans are killed while walking. There is no way to make transit faster, biking, or walking safer without inconveniencing motorists. We must not shy away from this. There is no freedom of modal choice when one endangers everyone in the immediate vicinity and all life on earth. Policies, budgets, and the built environment must start moving towards helping people make safer, healthier, more sustainable transportation choices.

This service would complement, not compete with local transit. Additional components would ensure service sustainability by fully utilizing vehicles and drivers.
• Kid Transit - Safe, convenient travel for ALL school-aged kids to get between home, school, and after-school activities. By combining transportation dollars from the school district and various agencies, with fees from parents who have the ability to pay, we have a foundation to provide vans + drivers + service to transport ALL students (mainly K-6) instead of just a handful of kids in dirty, diesel buses, or parent cars. We’re rooted in the thought that kids should not be limited to the school or activities to which their family can transport them.
• School operations - Field trip & athletics travel
• Older kids - disabled students and those with early start times, long commutes, late sports & activities
• Charter for non-school activities - student club sports & organizations
• Paratransit - Service all eligible riders via existing agencies. Employ their current drivers full-time and eliminate the dirty vehicles.
• Off-hours Adults - People who have transit available on just one part of their day
•• “Dawn shift” -- bakers, baristas, childcare workers
•• “Graveyard shift” -- bartenders, waitstaff, entertainers
•• 24/7 ops -- healthcare workers, biotech employees, security guards
• Urban Campus Circulators - Connections for secondary education & multi-site employers
In addition, the service would have a goal of teaching every child to ride a bike, advocating for a connected network of streets for people to walk/bike safely + rapid transit lanes, encouraging parents and school staff to travel in alternatives to single occupancy vehicles, and reducing the number of motor vehicles in a city and VMT.
