Hi SWE job hunters! I wanted to take a moment to share a personal journey that I hope may be of value to Software Engineers who are in the early(or not!) stages of their career or those feeling the weight of the job application process. My journey in tech began without a college degree, and while I currently serve as a Senior Software Engineering Manager, the road to get here was anything but straightforward. My initial foray into the job market saw me sending out an astounding ~400 applications before finding the right fit. It was a challenging period, filled with uncertainties and frequent rejections. However, it also became a time of profound learning and growth. During this intense period of applications and interviews, I felt the need for structure and clarity. Thus, I started meticulously tracking every job application - the role I applied for, the various stages of the process, points of contact, the type of application, and so much more. CommandBar is hiring software engineers (nice office in SF, or remote). I posted a bit ago about our open customer success ("customer PM") role and got a flood of awesome candidates, so rolling the dice again :) When we interview engineers we always ask "what part of CommandBar are you most excited to work on". The most common answer we get is "I want to do more backend stuff". Lots of reasons people say this, but I think the most common reason this answer is a reflex: at many companies, the best engineers do more backend stuff. Frontend is considered pixel pushing and commoditized. That narrative could not be more wrong at CommandBar. While we have a lot of fun backend problems to work on (e.g. making https://lnkd.in/gq8ksHdR answer questions quickly), every engineer works on the frontend too. Because ultimately we are a UX company, and the UX we sell is only as good as the frontend experiences we ship. So if you apply for the role and say you want to work mostly on backend stuff, just make sure you have some very specific, very time-consuming projects in mind :) https://lnkd.in/ggaK5puX

As a part of my Software Engineering journey to learn the unknown, I delved into C++ for the first time and went deeper with Bash scripting! With it, I built a Linux script to automate the installation of a Windows-only multiplayer mod using Proton for the popular game, BeamNG! The Linux gaming community is a growing community, in part thanks to Valve corporation with their Steam Deck, but it's still small and often doesn't get the attention it needs. I've never shared a "proud advisor moment" message before, but this time it's a must. I want to commend Shan Yu, who just completed her first year of her Ph.D. program at UCLA. She not only transformed VQPy into a robust industry project but also successfully integrated it into Cisco's deep vision platform during her summer internship at Cisco Research. What's truly remarkable is that she received a prestigious "You Amaze 2 Award" from Cisco for "driving the highest level of achievement". It's incredibly rare for an intern to achieve such recognition. I want to thank Hugo Latapie for being an amazing collaborator and nominating Shan Yu at Cisco and Pengzhan Z., Zhenting Zhu, Yu Chen, Hanry Xu, and Arthi Padmanabhan for your contributions to this project. To provide some context: VQPy is an object-oriented approach to video analytics. It's a Python library designed for video analytics developers, allowing them to concentrate on video objects, such as cars, animals, and humans, and their interactions, as opposed to adopting a SQL-like mindset that revolves around thinking in terms of tables. This approach offers two main advantages: 🍉 the ability to express complex queries in a natural and concise manner 🍋 the facilitation of extensive object-level optimizations, including memoization, which were previously unattainable within a SQL framework #videoanalytics #vqpy #computervision #visionmodels
