I recently had the wonderful opportunity to talk about the vital role adults play in empowering Black children to freely interact with their world with Executive Director Arthur G. Affleck, III from the Association of Children's Museums.   During our conversation, we emphasized how critical it is for adults to create and nurture environments where Black children can thrive. This is about more than individual actions—though those are crucial—but also about advocating for broader public policy and systemic changes that center Black children as valuable assets worthy of our time, attention and investments, rather than through a deficit-based lens. By viewing Black children as assets, we shift the narrative to one of empowerment and potential, recognizing their inherent strengths and capabilities.   As we continue these conversations and push for necessary changes, let's remember the power we have to shape a better future for our children. 124th National Black Business Conference Returns to Atlanta “We Are Together” Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the World Conference of Mayors. The National Alliance for Black Business (2022), co-founded by The National Business League ® (1900), National Black Chamber of Commerce ® (1993), and The World Conference of Mayors ® (1984), is thrilled to cohost the NBL’s 124th National Black Business Conference ®. Set to take place from August 21-24, 2024, at the Hilton Atlanta in downtown Atlanta, GA, this highly anticipated event coincides with Atlanta Black Business Weekend ™, promising an exhilarating gathering of the nation’s foremost Black business leaders and community luminaries.   Building upon the success of last year's conference, which commemorated the 30th Anniversary of the National Black Chamber of Commerce founded in 1993 and drew over 1,900 attendees, this year's event holds special significance as it celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the World Conference of Mayors. Established in 1984, The World Conference of Mayors serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Black Mayoral leadership and economic empowerment within Black communities worldwide. This year marks a significant milestone, as it pays homage to 50 years since the Southern Conference of Black Mayors held its inaugural National Conference at the Hilton Atlanta Hotel. Notably, Daniel "Chappy" James, the first four-star Black general in the Air Force and a Tuskegee airman, served as keynote speaker, setting the stage for the remarkable journey of Black elected leadership in the years to come. The conference agenda will spotlight the profound impact of Black mayors in fostering entrepreneurship, economic development, and community growth, echoing the visionary principles championed by Booker T. Washington. In 1881, Lewis Adams (Town) and Booker T. Washington (Gown) joined forces to establish Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, now known as Tuskegee University, in Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. This institution was surrounded by a historic Black settlement, conceived by Dr. Washington, which, though never formally incorporated, was assigned its own zip code: 36088. This collaboration between "Town" and "Gown" laid the groundwork for further partnerships in central Alabama.   Anticipated to attract hundreds of Black-owned businesses, professionals, and elected officials from around the globe, the conference will serve as a dynamic platform for networking, knowledge-sharing, and forging strategic partnerships with city, state, national, federal, and global resources, and leadership. The event is hosted by local, Black-led business institutions, including the Atlanta Business League, Greater Georgia Black Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council. This article from Black Enterprise Magazine came at the right time! As the former Executive Director and now CEO of End Rape On Campus (EROC), I've had the privilege of working with various leadership coaches. Today, my needs as a leader have evolved, and I'm at a critical juncture in my journey of rebuilding EROC and honoring its legacy. Before any executive leadership coaches reach out to me, please note: I’ll reach out as I do my preliminary research. I know what I want and need, and I’m intentional about finding the right fit. Here’s a snippet of what I’m looking for: - A Black Executive Leadership Coach: My career journey has been shaped by having had at least 12 white supervisors, 95% of whom were women-identified. Only one has consistently supported and mentored me, exemplifying true allyship. I seek a Black Executive Leadership Coach who understands the challenges I’ve faced and has successfully navigated similar experiences. Their insights on how they found their strength, will, and motivation will be invaluable as I chart my path forward. - Coaching Style: I need a coach with an authentic, supportive, and direct approach. Someone who isn’t afraid to ask tough questions, respectfully challenge me, and guide me towards an authentic and appropriate direction. - Current Goal: My vision is ambitious: to lead EROC through a $1 Million+ transformation. I need a coach who can help translate my ideas and drafts into a strategic and realistic pathway. I aim to ensure EROC’s sustainability and empower future staff to carry forward its mission with drive and motivation. - Investment: While I deeply desire to invest in myself or have my organization support me, it’s not feasible at this moment. I could NOT be more pumped for the work, design and growth Black Boys in Tech, Families Forward and the Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative (University of Cincinnati, College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services at the University of Cincinnati) are investing and building as we works towards a holistic, engaging, and cross curricula-focused, long term STEM continuum and after school programs into Cincinnati’s K12 schools. I visited Withrow High School (Cincinnati Public Schools) and the project they are working on is incredible. This was the first day of their final project for the year. We will continue working on this over the last 1.5 months of school, as these students apply: 1.) Critical thinking and planning skills related to today’s real life needs for our growing tech-focused future 2.) Utilizing and implementing the Scientific method and exploration (trial and error) strategies to problem solve and deliver successfully based on the scenario they picked and the step-by-step process 3.) Building and flying of their drones, accompanied by eventual 3D printing components to accompany their drone creation objective It is pretty wonderful to be a part of this team pursuing, implementing and designing equitable, exciting, and crucial opportunities to enable real equitable access and bright futures for ALL students! #STEM #Cincinnati #UniversityofCincinnati #TechClubs #BBIT #GCSC #CurriculumDesign #Education #Equity

WOW!!!! Thank you to The Bridgespan Group for penning the article: "Nonprofit Leadership Transitions: Four Ways Funders Can Support Leaders of Color". This article resonates deeply with my experiences as a Black woman leading a national service organization in the arts and culture sector. As more leaders of color move into executive leadership positions, we need funders to step up, show up, and show out to support us. Article highlight that the Philanthropic sector should pay attention to: 1. Lengthen the Funding Runway: Get rid of restrictive funding! Unrestricted funding gives leaders of color the space to innovate. 2. Build Transformational Platforms and Connect Networks: Connect us to networks and RESOURCES. Your support can open doors and pave the way for real change. When I talk to funders I'm looking for: a) alignment in my organization's vision; b) alignment to people/organizations in my network; c) opportunity to not make only a funding ask but a mutual resource ask. I have connected many funders to colleagues who I know could benefit their work and funders have connected me to other leaders who are aligned in my work. 3. Support Peer Exchange and Well-being: Investing in our well-being isn't just a bonus—it's a necessity. 4. Provide Targeted Supports for Transitions: Transition periods can be make or break for organizations. As someone who executed a strategic planning/transition process, having additional support can make all the difference in ensuring our success. Let's move beyond rhetoric and into action. I would love to see more opportunities come towards my colleagues and I as we navigate the arts and culture field (and the nonprofit sector) as leaders.
