On the #security front, issue #8 of 3GPP newsletter contains an article on the Security Assurance (#SCAS) specifications developed by SA WG3. Thanks to my colleagues in SA3, we have been prolific in creating Security Assurance specifications for all major EPC nodes, eNB (4G) and almost all 5G core network nodes. Theses specifications define the basic fundamental test cases which are are used in the GSMA NESAS certification program which are mandatory for the EU and many other regional #cyber-certification and compliance programs.

Get the new White paper Advanced eye diagram analysis Eye diagram analysis is vital to debugging high-speed interfaces and assessing data transmission quality. While traditional methods still have significant value, they also have several weaknesses with less accurate or less detailed analysis of signal quality. "Live eye" with an edge trigger provides a first glance but cannot capture non-transitional bits. Continued bit streams with a software CDR requires much more data and time consuming postprocessing. The new approach from Rohde & Schwarz utilizes a configurable hardware CDR for both a true "live eye" view of a signal, while also allowing for continued bit stream analysis by applying the timing information from the hardware CDR for the bit slicing, offering not only the fastest approach to high statistical confidence, but also a more in-depth analysis. Thanks to my friends and industry colleagues who participated in the poll. The poll was well attended and had a mixed response. The question for the poll was: In best radio condition, which one of the following options will lead to better spectral efficiency assuming UE supports both the options ·       Option-1: Using 256QAM over 64QAM·       Option-2: Using 2*2MIMO over SISO Here is my take on this: As in the image below, we can notice that going for higher order modulation does not necessarily mean it will increase data by 100% all the time. Beyond 16QAM, the improvement with every higher modulation scheme is just incremental in order of 2 bits/symbol. It is like 4bits Vs 6bits, 6bits Vs 8bits, 8bits Vs 10bits per symbol. Data rate Improvement by using 256QAM over 64 QAM is just about 30%. Where in with 2*2 MIMO in a good radio condition, 2 layers of data transmission (Spatial multiplexing) can be achieved, compared to 1 layer of transmission in SISO. That can result in improvement of data rate by approximately 100%. So, 2*2 MIMO over SISO would result in better spectral efficiency compared to using 256QAM over 64QAM. 📡 #LPWAN Fairy Tale: Sending Data via Pigeon with #MQTT, #CoAP, or #LwM2M? The myth of MQTT and energy consumption. MQTT isn't suitable for #NBIoT, #LTEM, and #5G #NTN. MQTT is based on #TCP, designed for wired connections. Weaknesses of MQTT: - TCP requires acknowledgement during connection setup, payload, and at the end of communication, with a timeout. - MQTT also requires acknowledgement during connection setup, payload, and at the end of communication, with a timeout. 🔍 Advantages of CoAP over MQTT: - UDP doesn't require acknowledgement during connection setup, payload, and at the end of communication, with no timeout. - CoAP doesn't need acknowledgement during connection setup, payload, and at the end of communication. A timeout can be freely chosen. CoAP can operate without acknowledgement. 🐦 NB-IoT and our pigeons can't guarantee acknowledgement before TCP timeout. NB-IoT and LTE-M Release Assistance Indication (#RAI) don't offer acknowledgement reception. RAI has the lowest energy consumption with NB-IoT, LTE-M, and 5G NTN. Even the MQTT timeout can't be met by pigeons. The estimated flight time based on an average speed of 60 km/h is 8 hours and 20 minutes to our island, 500 km away from the mainland. No chance with MQTT. ⏳ NB-IoT and LTE-M have a latency of 10 seconds with high Link Budget or Maximum Coupling Loss (MCL). 5G NTN has a 40-second latency, with occasional packet loss. A moving object may send a packet but not receive it later due to poor connection, a challenge for MQTT but less so for CoAP. 🛰️ Writing only about CoAP is incorrect. CoAP can use UDP, SMS, NB-IoT Non IP, MQTT, or even pigeons. NFC is used to read packets at the pigeon loft entrance. For the return channel, we can use mobile, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. 🤔 I hope that with CoAP via pigeon, it's clear why MQTT is unsuitable for wireless technology. ARM is planning to spin off a division focused on AI. This strategic move could allow ARM (Already dominant in the AI market especially on the edge) to leverage its corporate valuation of Arm cores in the AI segment. Interestingly, the hardware design blocks used in the development of AI chips are the same as those used in microcontrollers and microprocessors, but optimized for AI, especially on the edge. This involves the use of various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, each segment offering distinct characteristics that make it suitable for different types of communication: 1. Radio Waves: Used in broadcasting, navigation, and full-scale data communication networks like 2G, 3G, 4G, and now 5G. The ability to cover long distances makes radio waves indispensable for basic communication. 2. Microwaves: The workhorse behind your home Wi-Fi, microwaves also empower satellite communications and mobile phone signals. Their shorter wavelength allows the carrying of more data, which is crucial for achieving high-speed internet access. 3. Infrared: Though less talked about, infrared technology enables short-range communication such as in remote controls, some types of security systems, and data transmission between nearby devices. Why and how to achieve 100% cell tower fiberization? 1. Why fiberize all cell towers? Fiber has several thousand times more capacity than a wireless medium. Some MNOs say capacity is not a problem, but capacity becomes a problem if price is dropped to a point that's low enough to serve all users. If all cell towers were fiberized, capacity won't be a problem even at super low price levels as we saw with Reliance Jio in India. 2. How to fiberize all cell towers? Copy the Palapa Ring financing structure from Indonesia i.e. create an Availability Payment scheme, build fiber to ALL cell towers and offer pricing to MNOs that is capex and opex neutral to them. If you're not familiar with Availability Payments, here is the gist: a. First define a Revenue Requirement which is cost of operations + return on equity + cost of debt b. Second create a price chart on how to fulfil that Revenue Requirement. In the initial years there will be a short-fall to fulfil that Revenue Requirement but will go down as more towers get connected and over time price per end-point will actually fall. c. Capital providers will get their return, operating expenses will be covered and MNOs will pay a price they can afford. This is how many highways are financed. 3. Who funds this Revenue Requirement short-fall? In Indonesia's case it was the Universal Service and Obligation Fund. But there's no reason why multi laterals like the World Bank or Asian Development Bank can't provide such a facility. In fact such a facility solves a number of problems for multi-laterals because in an AP scheme, private sector competes to win a bid, mobilizes the capital and ensures network is running. Meaning no procurement headaches for multi-laterals and financiers. 4. How does this impact the end-user? When MNOs get a ton of capacity that is opex and capex neutral, they will offer more unlimited data packages at lower prices, resulting in faster mobile Internet at lower prices, even in rural areas. Remember that the equity investor who puts up capital to create this fiber network gets a fixed return but has no incentive to create artificial bandwidth scarcity. So long as MNOs get more capacity without increasing capex or opex, they will take this capacity and then give a better deal to consumers. 5. Why is this a realistic target? Over 90% of cell towers have an electrical connection but 30-40% have a fiber connection even though electrical infrastructure costs ~3x more per meter or per end point than fiber infrastructure. Why the difference? Because private capital isn't assuming demand risk when building electrical infrastructure. Meaning capital isn't the problem, demand risk is. As a world we want private capital to bridge the digital divide AND assume demand risk. This isn't possible. We also can't go back to telecom monopolies of days past. The Palapa Ring Project structure offers a great roadmap for other countries serious about bridging the digital divide.
