PACE’s OCI instrument collects data that can be used to study atmospheric conditions. The top three panels of this OCI image depicting dust from Northern Africa carried into the Mediterranean Sea, show data that scientists have been able to collect in the past using satellite instruments – true color images, aerosol optical depth, and the UV aerosol index. The bottom two images visualize novel pieces of data that will help scientists create more accurate climate models. Single-Scattering Albedo (SSA) tells the fraction of light scattered or absorbed, which will be used to improve climate models. Exploring Radar Micro-Doppler Signatures for Recognition of Drone Types is a work by Jun Yan, Huiping Hu, Jiangkun Gong, Deyong Kong, and Deren Li. In this study, the authors examine the use of micro-Doppler signals produced by different blade types (i.e., puller and lifting blades) to enhance radar-based target recognition of small drones. Small drones are categorized into three types based on their blade configurations: fixed-wing drones with only puller blades, multi-rotor drones with only lifting blades, and hybrid vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fixed-wing drones with both lifting and puller blades. https://hubs.la/Q02BWFKD0

The Space News podcast from the Federal News Network recently covered the International Space Station National Laboratory's new funding opportunity for in-space production applications, and space research in general. EIC portfolio company Orbital Sidekick used this program to test their hyperspectral imaging cameras. They were able to show that the tech was a viable way to monitor gas pipelines, among other applications. As OSK CEO Dan Katz put it in a fascinating in-depth interview with Upward, the ISS National Lab magazine: "The space station is a stable platform and has all the infrastructure and downlink capability in place, so all we had to really worry about was making sure the hyperspectral sensor worked. [...] The mission was wildly successful and really set the table for everything we’re doing today with our commercial satellites." Interesting paper out of the Beijing Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering analyzing an xGEO (termed "hypersynchronous orbit" in the paper) constellation of optical space surveillance satellites to mitigate the solar illumination challenges of viewing objects in the geosynchronous region around local solar soon from ground- and LEO-based optical sensors. Analysis focused on constellation semi-major axes of 50,000 - 60,000 km. (Nothing groundbreaking in terms of new science or noteworthy analysis - just the constellation concept is of interest). EASA is taking the threat of GPS spoofing and jamming seriously. That being said there is still a lot more that needs to be done. For example at Spirent Positioning, Navigation, and Timing we not only provide the testing systems used to develop new avionics, we are working on a global detection & alerting systems for GPS jamming and spoofing. On a daily basis we track flights that are spoofed and then have issues for the remainder of the flight. Crews need to know not only where the areas of interference are, but also have improved procedures to safeguard their systems. Better test and better monitoring are needed.

One of the constraints on accelerating the evolution of FPV drones used in the Ukrainian conflict stems from one of their greatest virtues: the use of standard civilian components. Whether it's the use of new frequency bands, video signal scrambling, or especially the employment of Edge AI resources for navigation in GNSS-denied environments or autonomous terminal guidance, most of the main advances of 2023 and 2024 are based on civilian components. The problem lies in that if the adversary manages to obtain a sufficiently intact device, reverse engineering work is facilitated by the use of standard components which, not being general-purpose, are not easy to obfuscate in code. When the adversary completes a reverse engineering task, the result is that they have saved time in developing a similar system or, worse, gained access to a resource they hadn't imagined or that was out of reach due to lacking a critical element. In other words, the frenzied pace of evolution in microdrone components and systems isn't as fast as it could be. On the other hand, the incentive to evolve these systems can be described as a (Alice in Wonderland) Red Queen's race: if one doesn't evolve quickly, falling behind has catastrophic consequences for either side. There's another more worrying scenario: a technologically highly capable adversary. China would be the perfect example, but not the only one. We must not forget that the evolution of microdrones doesn't require enormous and exquisite technological or human resources. Once the possibilities have been demonstrated by example, the incentive to develop these capabilities in a sustained manner is evident. If said adversary spends quarter after quarter on iterative development and concerted responses to different needs, in a relatively short time they can acquire an arsenal: * With completely unprecedented capabilities and without an adequate response from their adversaries. * Oriented towards mass production yet modular and adaptable. * Deployable both massively and sustainably over time. The response to this scenario is frankly difficult. It's not obvious how defensive means can acquire this pace of evolution and adaptability. In all likelihood, data is at the center of this response, but it will possibly require priority and investments far superior to those being employed by who is developing vectors and effectors based on microdrones. All in all, not responding is not an option. Time will pass for everyone, and each party will reap what they sow and at the pace they sow it.

The conjunction assessment algorithms used should all be open source and run at the edge. Data that is used for individual conjunctions (ephemeris, state vectors, element sets, etc.) must be shared, allowing all participants to do as many iterations as required for their own analysis, whether that is maneuver planning, launch COLA, etc. If there is a cost associated with the data source, the cost must be borne by the regulatory agencies charged with traffic management. If the cost is infeasible, the data too infrequently used, or the data is not openly available, the system must use homomorphic encryption (like the Paillier ecosystem of algorithms) to protect proprietary or classified data sources while still enabling conjunction assessment calculations.

Pan of Region around ZS7 Galaxy System Black Hole Merger | Webb Telescope FriendsofNASA.org: This image shows the environment of the galaxy system ZS7 from the JWST PRIMER program (PI: J. Dunlop) as seen by Webb's NIRCam instrument. New research using the NIRSpec instrument on the NASA/European Space Agency/Canadian Space Agency James Webb Space Telescope has determined the system to be evidence of an ongoing merger of two galaxies and their massive black holes when the Universe was only 740 million years old. This marks the most distant detection of a black hole merger ever obtained and the first time that this phenomenon has been detected so early in the Universe. The team has found evidence for very dense gas with fast motions in the vicinity of the black hole, as well as hot and highly ionised gas illuminated by the energetic radiation typically produced by black holes in their accretion episodes. Webb also allowed the team to spatially separate the two black holes and determined that one of the two black holes has a mass that is 50 million times the mass of the Sun. Thrilled to share that our paper, "Enhancing Resolution and Fault Tolerance of Barrier Coverage with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles," is out in the latest issue of the Journal of Aerospace Information Systems (JAIS)! This work proposes a resolution cost function to optimize barrier coverage for UAV networks. NASA seeks industry support in GLIMR concept study WASHINGTON - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced that the agency is seeking assistance from industry as it begins a study into its Geostationary Littoral Imaging and Monitoring Radiometer (GLIMR) Access to Space (ATS) approach. The GLIMR mission aims to provide transformative rapid observations of dynamic coastal zone ecosystems throughout the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and coastal continental U.S. (CONUS). Its goal is to observe and monitor ocean biology, chemistry, and ecology to help protect ecosystem sustainability, improve resource management, and enhance economic activity. This includes identifying and tracking harmful algal blooms and oil spills, while also observing, quantifying, and understanding processes associated with rapid changes in phytoplankton growth. https://lnkd.in/eP64-RQr

COMSPOC subject matter experts -- Dan Oltrogge, David Vallado, Robert Hall & John Cornelius coauthored with the Space Data Association to publish a new peer-reviewed paper technical performance assessment of achievements in the DOC’s GEO/MEO Pilot program. Key facets of their participation in the Pilot were deep collaboration and authoritative data sharing between spacecraft operators and commercial #SSA and the use of COMSPOC's SSA Software Suite to comprehensively fuse operator observations and planned maneuvers with its own observations from the company’s global network of optical sensors, resulting in a sevenfold accuracy improvements in both GEO and MEO over legacy SSA.
