. WHERE ARE THOSE DARN J=3/2+ STATES ? Larry Zamick Department of Physics and Astrology., Busch Campus , Rutgers University Piscataway, NJ 08854 Abstract: In a previous paper (A. Escuderos and L. Zamick Phys. Rev. C 73, 044302 (2006) ) there were 2 parts. The first part had to do with a state of pure seniority on the g9/2 shell. But here we focus on the second part in which the splitting E (21/2+)- E( 3/2+) is discussed for n=3 and n=5 of the (g9/2) ^n configuration. These J values. are the maximum and minimum ones for n=3. We note the complete absence of empirical data on J=3/2+ states needed to make comparisons. ................................................................................................................................ We here quote excepts from the paper “Seniority Conservation and Seniority in the g9/2 shell” (See abstract). “IV. THE ENERGY SPLITTING E(Imax)− E(Imin) WITHA Q· Q INTERACTION “A well-known result for identical particles in a single j shell is that, if one uses a seniority-conserving interaction, then the relative spectra of states of the same seniority are independent of the number of particles [5–7]. Thus, for n = 3 and n = 5, the seniority v = 3 states have the same relative spectrum; for n = 2,4, and 6, the seniority v = 2 states have the same spectrum. These results hold, in particular, for the delta interaction used here. Now the Q·Q interaction does not conserve seniority and the above results do not hold. However, we have noticed an interesting result for n = 3 and n = 5. Consider the splitting E = E(Imax)−E(Imin),v= 3, where for g9/2, Imax = 21/2 and Imin = 3/2. For a seniority-conserving interaction, E(n = 5) = E(n = 3), whereas for a Q·Q interaction, E(n = 5) = − E(n = 3). “ Define DE =E(max)-E(min) =E(21/2) -E(3/2) . “Using the V(98Cd) interaction for 97Ag and 95Rh, we find DE(n = 3) = 0.77058 MeV, DE(n = 5) = 0.87818 MeV. They are both positive, an indication that the seniority conserving delta interaction is much more important than the seniority-violating Q · Q interaction. “ However in the Zr region DE(83Zr) = 0.48742 MeV, DE(85Zr) =−0.59355 MeV. There are qualifications of considering the Zr region where deformations are very large. But it does show an inversion indicating that here a Q.Q interaction is more important that for 97Ag and 95 Rh. This was stated in the 2006 paper: “Unfortunately, for the g9/2 nuclei that we are here considering (93Tc, 95Rh, 97Ag, as well as the zirconium isotopes 83Zr, 85Zr, and 87Zr), although the high spin states including I =21/2+ have been identified, the I = 3/2+ states have not been found yet. “ . As far as I can tell it is still true in 2024. Hopefully this blog will stimulate experimentalists to search for these darn J=3/2 + states in the 6 nuclei mentioned here . That would help us to ascertain the relative importance of seniority conserving and seniority violating interactions.

Quantum computing offers a true paradigm shift in computational power, promising exponential capabilities for taking on complex problems that are practically impossible for classical computers to solve. An interdisciplinary team at University of Massachusetts Amherst is now part of a $26M effort to “lay the foundations for a socially responsible quantum Internet.” The Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences, UMass Amherst, the College of Engineering, UMass Amherst, and the UMass Amherst Department of Physics are helping to design the infrastructure to support future city-scale quantum networks, an effort overseen by the Center for Quantum Networks, a $26 million, five-year, renewable initiative led by the University of Arizona, one of the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s Engineering Research Centers. 🥁 Next week Monday, (June 24th), the Computational Linguistics Seminar will host Cassandra Jacobs from the University at Buffalo for a talk titled "Understanding constraint satisfaction and prediction in large language models with information flow" at Lab42 and online via Zoom. 📆 Monday, June 24th, 16:00 CET 📍 Amsterdam Science Park LAB42 UvA (L3.36) or online via Zoom 🔗 For more information: https://lnkd.in/e4Htf7ss Abstract: Constraint satisfaction (CS) theories of language processing (Seidenberg & MacDonald, 2006) proposed that interpreting ambiguous sentences like, "Kelly saw the boxer at the pet store" requires probabilistically balancing a wide variety of linguistic constraints, especially interactions between lexical information. Today, the scale of large language models (LLMs) allow us to re-evaluate constraint satisfaction theories. In this talk, I present an approach that quantifies the amount of work taking place in the attention matrices to characterize how readily lexical ambiguity is resolved. I first show that changing the ambiguity of a single word in a sentence reshapes the attention matrices largely in accordance with CS theories. Then, I show that lexical ambiguity does not have a uniform effect on the sentence representation depending on the "directionality" of the LLM (e.g., GPT-2 vs. RoBERTa), and that ambiguity manifests differently at different layers. Building on this, I turn to the probabilistic dimension of CS theories and present work that shows that token embeddings can capture human linguistic uncertainty. Further layerwise analyses show that higher layers in LLMs generally provide the best fit to human behavior, but models vary in the information flow trajectories that give rise to probabilistic predictions, and systematically under-estimate the probabilities of human decision-making. I conclude with discussion of in-progress work to better align LLMs with human linguistic decisions.
