The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) has an opening for a Therapist Supervisor position to serve at the Activities Director at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove (WVHUG).

The veterans home is a long-term care facility that specializes in providing comfort, support, and professional healthcare services to elderly or disabled veterans and their spouses. The facility is located off Highway 11 in-between Burlington and Racine and is a short drive from Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, and other key locations throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.

The Activities Director is responsible for all aspects of the facility’s Activities Therapy Program. This position ensures that the program follows state, federal CMS, and federal Veterans Administration rules and regulations for skilled nursing homes. The position also oversees the provision of a wide variety of therapeutic and diversionary activities to help maintain a high quality of life for the members.

The responsibilities of this position also include program planning, implementation and evaluation, member assessment, supervision of staff, budgeting, purchasing, and monitoring of equipment used for programming in assigned areas. The Activities Director serves as a member of each resident’s interdisciplinary team.

The starting pay rate for this position is between $35.00 - $43.46 an hour ($72,800 and $90,396 annually) or up to the appointment maximum at the time of appointment. Current state employees' pay will be based on the provisions in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. This classification is in Pay Schedule 81, Pay Range 03. A twelve-month probationary period will be required.

Due to the nature of the position, WDVA will conduct a comprehensive background check prior to an offer of employment.

Employment in this position is contingent upon passing a pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

Employees at this healthcare facility are required to report their COVID-19 vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not, and provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information by their third day of employment.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of application. Minimally qualified candidates will have formal education or experience in the field of Recreational Therapy (e.g., utilizing music, art, or other leisure activities to promote recovery from illness, injury, or disability).

In addition to the above, well qualified candidates will have experience:

  • Performing supervisory duties (e.g., evaluate work performance, hire, and onboard staff, provide coaching, conduct performance reviews, etc.); or
  • Providing activities programming in a skilled nursing facility or long-term care setting.
