Application Administrator

6 Month Contract to Hire

Hybrid (3 days on-site, 2 remote)

If I had to rank the skillsets of importance this would be the order:

  • Middleware architecture/support
  • IPaaS integration platforms, Workato bypass
  • Moving on prem to AWS Cloud so experience here is AWS certs would be nice.
  • Solid database skillset….6-8 instances of Oracle not much going on there so it’s not a must to have Oracle.
  • SQL Server
  • Supporting web services, source load management, building pipelines
  • Some scripting experience.
  • Snowflake or some BI reporting would be nice .

Position Summary

The Application Administrator is principally responsible for managing and improving the overall performance of the university’s enterprise systems. The work of the position is wide-ranging and includes designing, implementing, and managing applications, middleware and database infrastructure while ensuring security, compliance, and operational excellence.

Working under the guidance of the director, the Application Administrator is expected to exhibit a high-level of problem-solving ability and resourcefulness and is competent to work independently on fairly complex applications, middleware and database management systems with minimal supervision. The position regularly operates under deadlines and should be capable of handling multiple priorities. The position works collaboratively with technical staff within the university’s Information Services and Technology Division, external vendors, and representatives from across the university so that enterprise applications are optimized to meet the on-going business of the university.

Essential Functions

  • Strengthen enterprise systems by incorporating cloud strategies, integration strategies, new designs, architectures, standards and methods.
  • Implement application performance management strategies, database strategies, monitoring strategies, and facilitate proactive planning to improve overall application performance and capacity.
  • Lead the planning and deployment for future improvements for both on premise and cloud applications.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues and anomalies related to enterprise systems.
  • Provide database-related technical support for application developers including creating tablespaces and related objects.
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of security measures.
  • Integrate middleware systems with identity providers for centralized authentication and user provisioning and manage user access, permissions, and roles.
  • Assist with planning for backup and recovery of enterprise database information.
  • Create and maintain documentation collaborating with project leader, technical staff and functional representatives.
  • Provide after hours on-call support for critical issues.
  • Leverage vendor sites and keep up to date with current technology trends.
  • Perform all duties and maintain all standards in accordance with university policies, procedures and core values. Add something on security. Adopting frameworks, standards, processes and tools promoted by IST and/or the University.

Additional Functions

  • Participates regularly in broader conversations within the Information Systems and Technology division to strengthen overall systems architecture. 2. Mentors and guides less experienced functional and technical personnel. 3. Assesses and recommends new technology and solutions to the university. 4. Assists faculty and researchers upon when requested with innovative technology projects. 5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Prerequisite Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree as well as 5-7 years progressive experience in applications, middleware, and database management. Analytical, organizational, planning and technical skills as well as good oral and written communication skills are required. Demonstrated and hands-on experience incorporating cloud solutions, ERP and analytics systems. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of information technology, information management and security principles. Ability to apply this knowledge to the development and management of difficult and complex technical assignments is required. At the university's discretion, education and experience prerequisites may be accepted where the candidate can satisfactorily demonstrate an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, ECS) is beneficial.
  • Snowflake, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server Database Administration and Administration
  • Scripting Bash, Python, Perl, Powershell
  • Ellucian Banner ERP system, Ellucian's ODS/EDW, and Banner Document Management System
  • Microstrategy and Cognos Business Intelligence tools
  • Directory Service, Identity and Access Management knowledge desired
  • Knowledge of integration platforms like Workato
  • Web technologies including Apache Web and Tomcat
  • Performance and security monitoring tools (e.g., Splunk, Observability, )
