About The Opportunity

The Campus Recreation Associate Director, Programs serves on the department three-person senior leadership team and assists the Director with the operational, financial and personnel functions of the Campus Recreation department; serves as a central administrator for the buildings, programs/events, and services. Reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, the Associate Director is responsible for coordinating the daily operations, staffing, and strategic visioning for the department as well as the student development initiatives. Fosters an environment which is passionate about student development and the mentoring of young professionals. While working collaboratively with the other Associate Director, Operations, this individual directly supervises full-time staff in programming areas including: Competitive Sports, Fitness, Youth Programs, and the Craft Center. Potential supervision in other areas depending on candidate experience. Supervisory areas and program oversight will be matched to the individual’s background experience and future goals. In addition, the Associate Director oversees a number of Process Teams that develop and implement recreational programming and services. Responsible for growing activity offerings in line with university needs and industry trends.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as Director in his/her absence.
  • Assist Director in managing, leading, and directing the operational, financial, and personnel functions for Campus Recreation programs and services.
  • Provide support in the supervision and mentoring of full-time staff/employees in programming and operational areas.
  • Lead the Programming Process Team with all related staff.
  • Collaborate with other Student Life units and University departments in cooperative program and facility development.
  • Develop operating procedures, policies, and protocols; monitor and enhance customer services.
  • Oversee the development of programs and events to enhance Campus Recreation objectives and program goals.
  • Develop, monitor, and maintain multiple budgets and revenue income planning including fee-based structure changes and cost projections.
  • Advise staff in making wise investments of university resources in such areas as personnel, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist Director by managing human resources functions; provide staff training and problem resolution.
  • Direct, coordinate, or supervise major programming initiatives for the University.
  • Serve on internal and external committees and project teams.

Program Development

  • Create an environment that inspires innovation and effective student development outcomes.
  • Build strong partnerships with other departments on campus. Assist with departmental branding through program design.
  • Provide leadership and oversight in the development and operation of recreation programs for the overall campus community.
  • Provide leadership and oversight in the preparation, presentation, and implementation of short and long term departmental goals.
  • Provide vision and administer efficient and effective recreation programming through engagement in systematic strategic planning, assessment, and reporting.
  • Review and evaluate programs, activities and services to ensure user satisfaction, student development outcomes and that appropriate risk management precautions and procedures are in place.
  • Assist with additional areas of program delivery dependent on individual competency and program needs.

Personnel Management

  • Responsible for direct and indirect personnel management of department staff including recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, development, and discipline.
  • Provide managerial and leadership experiences to full time and student staff in various aspects of program development, facility operations, and risk management.
  • Administer employee and participant related disciplinary action.
  • Create, encourage, and support professional development opportunities for staff, including professional association involvement, training programs, and individual mentoring.

Operational Facility Management

  • Serve as a backup in the management of all operational aspects of the facility.
  • Manage vendor relationships related to programmatic equipment.
  • Oversee policies and procedures related to scheduled and informal recreation.

Fiscal Accountability

  • Provide leadership and oversight in the preparation, presentation, and implementation of the department budget to include managing and meeting expense and revenue goals.
  • Monitor operating budgets for programming related target revenues and expenditures.
  • Assist with long-term planning and forecast of recreational and fitness equipment replacement.
  • Prepare financial, participation, and operational reports as needed.
  • Establish financial targets and set fees for premium programs and services.

Administration

  • Provide leadership to the department's comprehensive assessment initiatives.
  • Become proficient in the use of Fusion as a management tool for Campus Recreation specifically as it relates to program administration.

Minimum Of 5 Years Experience

  • Progressively responsible supervisory position in a college or university recreation environment including supervision of one or more full time staff.
  • Progressively responsible experience in personnel management, risk management, and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated computer competency.
  • Demonstrated competency in customer service delivery systems.

Licenses/Certifications

  • First Aid/CPR & AED certification (possess or obtain within 6 weeks of employment).
  • CPO/AFO (Certified Pool Operator/Aquatic Facility Operator) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Passionate about student development and the mentoring of young professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, student organizations, faculty/student committees, different government agencies, and community groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse groups of individuals employing flexibility in management techniques, appropriate to a variety of situations.
  • Possess and apply an entrepreneurial approach to planning and problem solving.
  • Knowledge and ability to manage multiple programs/events at multiple facilities, including, but not limited to, modern recreation centers, legacy buildings, natural grass and artificial turf fields as well as spaces leased from third parties.
  • Knowledge and ability to effectively handle public relations.
  • Strong time management and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to creatively plan and budget programs.
  • Skilled in program needs assessment and evaluation processes.
  • Working knowledge of contract negotiation and preparation.
