Summary
The Associate Director serves as a senior leader in the department and manages the day-to-day operations of the unit. The Associate Director supports the Associate AD, Recreation and Aquatic Facilities with high-level department decisions and leads the strategic development, administration, and programs for the department. The Associate Director also manages the group exercise and mind/body program, the wellness and assessment program, and equipment inventory, purchase and maintenance. The Associate Director coordinates facility maintenance project management efforts for the fitness centers and provides guidance and oversight in promoting inclusivity initiatives, policy development and promotion, personnel management, fiscal accountability, program assessment, communication and team cohesion.
The incumbent contributes to the profession outside the AU community through events sponsored by NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sports Association) on the state, regional and national level.

Essential Functions

- Oversees all fitness and wellness programs of the Jacobs Fitness Center and Cassell Fitness Center, Duber Fitness Center, and campus community. Develops and administers a comprehensive fitness and wellness program for the unit. Oversees equipment inventory, monitors useful life and depreciation of assets, and ensures assets are repaired or replaced as needed.
- Supervises three Fitness Coordinators and one Fitness Center Manager including hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, and coaching.
- Provides operational and administrative leadership for the Recreational Sports & Fitness department. Oversees the day-to-day operations. Assists the Associate AD, Recreation and Aquatic Facilities with overall management of the department including budget development and management, strategic planning, assessment, risk management, personnel management, policy and procedure development and implementation of programs designed for the recreational needs of the campus. Determines and recommends equipment purchases and supplies and materials needed for program operations. Provides leadership and guidance to Assistant Directors and department staff.
- Serves as the primary Recreation liaison and partners with Facilities Management for the planning, management, coordination and oversight of maintenance and capital projects for the fitness centers. Identifies the need for contract services for maintenance, repair, or alterations and assists with preparing scope of work specifications for services. Monitors and ensures that work is completed according to the terms of the contract. Follows up and inspects orders, materials received, and work completed and reports on noncompliance with contract requirements.
- Keeps current with trends, certifications, and knowledge in the campus recreation field in general and the health and fitness field specifically. Demonstrates growth in fitness program activities variety and quantity and levels of participation. Contributes to the profession outside the AU community through involvement in both regional and national NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sports Association).
- Participates in and contributes to groups, project teams and organizations across the AU community. Represents the department on relevant task forces and committees and acts as a representative for the Director when necessary.
- Contributes to planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating of events and activities to further the mission of Recreational Sports and Fitness.

- Supervises 3 Fitness Coordinators and 1 Fitness Center Manager.
- Full-time/35 hours per week.
- $83,000-$85,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
- A minimum of five years’ experience in directing or working in a college recreation program or comparable fitness setting.
- Fitness programming, fitness testing experience, instructor training and supervisory skills necessary.
- Master's degree in health/fitness, kinesiology or related field.
- 5-8 years of relevant experience.
- Positive personal projection of health and fitness lifestyle practices.
- Current CPR and AED certification.
- At least one nationally recognized and accredited group exercise certification and or personal training certification.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and good interpersonal skills.
- Able to demonstrate responsibility and initiative.
- Able to regularly exercise independent judgement within known practices and to resolve problems in the area of administrative oversight.
- Able to conduct analysis and prepare reports including participation statistics, activity evaluations, as well as planning and reconciliations with demonstrated fiscal accountability experience.
