Glimpse of the Job:

The Associate Research Scientist position (located in Galveston, Texas) is responsible for facilitating internal and external research collaborations with the Institute for a Disaster Resilient. Texas (IDRT) and Center for Texas Beaches and Shores (CTBS), leading education and outreach efforts for IDRT; and mentoring PhD students.

Salary is commensurate based on hire's experience.

THIS POSITION IS ON SITE. THE SELECTED CANDIDATE IS REQUIRED TO BE ON CAMPUS/IN PERSON.

Other Requirements and Factors: 6% travel to Netherlands (3 weeks per year for scoping and student research trip to the Netherlands).

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD in Urban and Regional Sciences or related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience researching flood risk reduction and developing and leading multidisciplinary, international research and education programs, including: one (1) year experience writing grant proposals; and one (1) year experience mentoring and teaching both undergraduate and graduate students coastal resiliency and flood risk reduction.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Submission of portfolio/document(s) showing skill in survey development, implementation, and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • 40%: Performs Research Activities on coastal resiliency and flood risk reduction. Acts as the primary contact for facilitating internal collaboration between IDRT/TAMU, including students, staff, and faculty. Acts as the primary contact for facilitating external collaboration between IDRT and TU Delft, VU Amsterdam, Rijkswaterstaat, and other Dutch institutions.
  • 15%: Mentors researcher personnel. Leads the Education and Outreach sector of the IDRT. Mentors new PhD students and helps to connect them to IDRT.
  • 15%: Serves as Editor of Research Publications. Coordinates, organizes, and serves as an editor for IDRT publications, specifically the forthcoming NSF PIRE book project on international coastal flood risk reduction.
  • 10%: Provides Support of IDRT Activities. Provides guidance and supervision on survey creation and implementation that supports the IDRT focus on education, coastal risk reduction, and communication.
  • 10%: Develops Educational Programs. Develop a study abroad program and educational student exchange program with TU Delft and other Dutch institutions.
  • 5%: Provides Guidance and Development of Data Systems. Developing socioeconomic data components for the TX Disaster Information System.
  • 5%: Prepares Grant Proposals and Submission. Leads research education grant proposal writing and submission.
