Job Description:

This position provides athletic training services for designated teams at the University of Saint Joseph in accordance with NATA guidelines and practices. The assistant athletic trainer is responsible for assisting the head athletic trainer in all aspects of sports medicine, in consultation with the team physician. This position has a 10-month schedule.

Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to)

  • Assesses, rehabilitates and treats acute injuries and work to enhance injury prevention strategies
  • Provides coverage at USJ sponsored athletic practices and events. Includes, but not limited to, immediate injury evaluation, treatment, and critical and independent decision making involving return to participation
  • Creates and implements appropriate rehabilitation techniques for individual injuries and embodies the ability to progress them through a return-to-play appropriate for their individual sport
  • Responsible for medical documentation of all athletic injuries, treatments and progress notes in an electronic medical records tracking system. Additional responsibilities involving documentation include enrolling student-athletes in the secondary insurance policy, writing and handling injury claims, and communication with the sports medicine team.
  • Collaborates with various sport coaches, strength & conditioning coaches, sports medicine professionals and administration
  • Operates in high intensity and stressful environments with prioritization of student-athlete health at all times
  • Thinks critically and makes independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • Ensures compliance with all College, NCAA Division III and GNAC policies as well as state licensure policies and NATA/BOC requirements

Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training, Master's Degree preferred
  • National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) certified
  • Previous Athletic Training experience at college or university level (3+ years preferred)
  • CPR and First Aid or EMT Certification required
  • Current (or eligible for) Connecticut state license required

 Other Qualifications

  • Available for evening and weekend work as needed
  • Ability to apply knowledge to a large range of medical problems for effective assessment, evaluation, and treatment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situation when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff and families; excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents
  • Ability to organization, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.
  • Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
  • Cultural competency to work with diverse student and employee population
  • Flexible and able to multi-task
  • Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision
  • Professional, courteous demeanor and appearance; ability to work professionally with students, faculty, staff and administration and represent the University professionally to the public

Physical Requirements

The Athletic Department is a fast paced, intensive, high energy environment. Work is medium demand. Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Medium strength is required to position patients for examination. May assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
