Job Description

This role is a full-time position working as an employee of Kranz Consulting, while providing fractional/interim CFO consulting services to our clients. This position will report to the Emerging Growth Practice Leader.

The role requires a seasoned professional with excellent interpersonal and natural leadership skills, coupled with demonstrated CFO experience in Finance & Accounting consulting. The person should be comfortable generating new business through the cultivation of existing relationships and the development of new relationships through various efforts. In addition, being able to cross-sell other firm services including Technical Accounting as well as VC Fund Administration. Key to the role as a Senior member of Kranz is to promote a culture of collaboration and mentorship to the junior staff.

Overall Responsibilities

  • This position reports to and takes direction from the Kranz Emerging Growth Practice Leader
  • Consulting CFO acts as primary contact with the client on consulting engagements
  • Utilization goal = 65-70% billable (on average) while spending time on business development activities

CFO Responsibilities:

  • Manages client financial functions, including accounting, finance, treasury, and systems.
  • Responsible for prospecting new business development opportunities and attending prospective client meetings to architect solutions based on client needs
  • Assisting with the execution of onboarding new clients
  • Provides Quality Assurance for internal Kranz work-product prior to client delivery.
  • Engages and coordinates with specialist resources as appropriate (tax, legal, benefits, etc)

ACCOUNTING

  • Oversee the accounting team on all accounting matters and ensure timely and accurate accounting close and consolidations, driving compliance and efficiency across the accounting, controllership, and month-end close functions
  • Direct the development of, and communicate policies to team members to help ensure adherence to GAAP along with a roadmap for a full transition from modified to full GAAP
  • Preparation, maintenance, reporting and presentation of all financial statements including supporting reconciliations and a thorough understanding of the basis of presentation, and supporting footnotes and disclosures as needed, including debts/warrants, inventory, COGS, etc
  • Develop and maintain thorough knowledge and understanding of accounting policies, financial systems, transaction processes, internal controls, and chart of accounts
  • Review journal entries for more complex accounting areas with explanation and description of accounting. Reviews account analyses and monthly analytical review of balance sheets and income statements
  • Ensure timely billing and invoicing of all revenue and compliance with all revenue recognition policy and guidelines including ASC606 and differences between ASC 605 and ASC 606
  • Ensure lease accounting in compliance with ASC 842
  • Manage and comply with local, state, federal and international government reporting, including sales and use tax preparation and filings, state tax registrations, franchise tax filings and supporting tax accountants, as necessary.
  • Responsible for preparing and presenting financial information to Investors and Audit Committee, as necessary
  • Research and resolve complex accounting issues while balancing client preferred solutions
  • Clearly communicate the requirements of US GAAP, as well as the current diversity of practice for modified GAAP amongst early-stage companies

FINANCE

  • Provide analytical support and business guidance to the client’s Leadership Team on key strategic decisions
  • Identifies key risks and opportunities facing the company and makes recommendations as they affect the financial results of the company and its business
  • Develop key metrics and dashboards including experience with SaaS revenue models. Work with other members of the client’s Leadership Team to drive improvement in these key business metrics
  • Budgeting, Forecasting & Planning: Assist in the preparation of and monitor the company’s actual performance against the current budget, rolling forecasts, and business plan
  • Partner with business leads to understand and explain financial variances in the plans and the forecasts to influence the direction of the business
  • Reporting: Ensure timely reporting of monthly financial information for the executive staff, outside stakeholders, and the Board of Directors.
  • Prepares detailed analyses, summaries, and reports of financial data on the operating progress of the company on a periodic basis
  • Strategic: Provide financial support and leadership in the following areas (as necessary):
    • fundraising activities,
    • transactions and liquidity events
    • other strategic events affecting the company’s financial performance
    • Business Analytics: Design and/or maintain processes and systems to ensure robustness
and accuracy of data that flow into Reporting and Analytics for the business

Investor relations: Lead Investor reporting

TREASURY

  • Manage the cash records for the company, ensure proper reconciliation of all cash accounts with bank and project future cash forecasts
  • Provides oversight of effective client internal controls
  • Monitor all subsidiary ledgers for customer activities and ensure timely collection
  • Manage foreign currencies as needed and consider functional/local currency analysis/elections and risk management derivatives
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining banking relationships.
  • Manages the company’s compliance with local and federal regulatory matters
  • Debt: Maintain adequate debt coverage in support of the company’s needs and plan
  • Risk management: maintain proper insurance coverages
  • Reviews major contracts and subcontracts for completeness, and risk management issues
  • Revenue Recognition: Review all contracts with customers and vendors. Ensure consistency and compliance with company policies and accounting requirements.
  • Remains current in federal and multiple state tax laws
  • Accountable for the maintenance of the company’s stock register and proper recording of all equity activity in the balance sheet. Ensure tax compliance with the issuance of ISO’s/NSO’s for Stock based equity transactions and the timely completion of 409A valuation reports

OTHER

  • Responsible for various client accounting systems and the integration with other key business systems and applications to support business growth, in partnership with Information Technology, as needed
  • Responsible for business development, architecting solutions for potential clients, and onboarding new clients based on the approved proposal

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree, MBA / CPA preferred
  • Consulting experience preferred
  • Large accounting firm experience preferred
  • Proven experience in the CFO-level Role in a for-profit company
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting and finance experience, 5 years of managerial experience leading accounting teams in a global company, including 3+ at a public company. International accounting experience, preferred
  • Experience working with fast growth, rapidly changing, fast-paced companies with multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and current revenue recognition & financial reporting trends.
  • Strong skills in both Microsoft and Google suite, proficient in complex accounting systems. Prior ERP implementation experience highly preferred
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Ability to see the big picture and anticipate business issues
  • Experience negotiating contracts with suppliers and customers, including software license agreements, purchase agreements, and other business agreements
  • Demonstrated experience in managing the day-to-day aspects of consulting, client relationships and projects
  • Demonstrated leadership and effective management in a growing professional services organization
  • Ability to execute and operate in high-pressure and fast-paced environments
  • Ability to quickly adapt to unexpected changes in timelines, deadlines, and scope of work
  • Experience across a wide variety of industries
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and develop successful work teams
  • Must have high-level integrity, sense of creativity, good business judgment, and be able to quickly gain the respect of the senior management team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a sincere customer service attitude are essential
