What will you do?

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in Danville, VA, is a key executive responsible for overseeing the strategic planning, development, implementation, and management of the institution’s information technology (IT) initiatives. The CIO will ensure that IT systems and processes align with the institution’s goals, enhance its research capabilities, and support educational programs. This role requires a visionary leader with a strong background in IT, federal contracts, cybersecurity/compliance, and higher education administration.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning and Leadership:
    • Develop and implement an IT strategic plan that aligns with the institution’s mission and goals.
    • Provide visionary and operational leadership for IT initiatives.
    • Collaborate with executive leadership to drive innovation and technological advancement.
  • IT Management and Operations:
    • Oversee the management of IT infrastructure, including networks, hardware, software, and cybersecurity.
    • Ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of IT systems and services.
    • Direct the design, implementation, and maintenance of the institution’s IT architecture.
  • Budget and Resource Management:
    • Develop and manage the IT budget, ensuring cost-effective solutions and resource allocation.
    • Identify and pursue funding opportunities for IT projects and initiatives.
    • Optimize the use of resources to meet current and future technological needs.
  • Team Leadership and Development:
    • Lead and mentor the IT team, fostering a culture of collaboration and professional growth.
    • Recruit, retain, and develop top IT talent.
    • Promote continuous learning and staying current with emerging technologies.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:
    • Serve as the primary liaison between IT and other departments, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
    • Present IT strategies and initiatives to stakeholders, including the Board of Directors and external partners.
    • Advocate for the role of technology in enhancing educational and research outcomes.
  • Policy and Governance:
    • Develop and enforce IT policies, standards, and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to best practices.
    • Ensure data governance and privacy.
    • Monitor and manage IT risks and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Innovation and Research Support:
    • Support and enhance the institution’s research capabilities through advanced technology solutions.
    • Collaborate with researchers to identify and implement IT tools that facilitate cutting-edge research.
    • Promote the use of data analytics and artificial intelligence to drive research innovation.
Where will you work?

We are looking for staff to work onsite in Danville, VA.

What do you offer?

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Information Technology, Computer Science, Programming, Information Systems, or a related field [IT experience will be considered in lieu of MS)
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in IT leadership roles, preferably within higher education, manufacturing, or a research institution environment
  • A minimum of 5 years of leadership and management experience in the IT field
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful IT strategies and initiatives
  • Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, data management, and emerging technologies
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and optimize resources
  • Experience in leading and developing high-performing teams
  • Experience with security and compliance, i.e. NIST, CMMC, DFARS, ITAR, etc.
  • Industry certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CCSP, etc.
  • Experience leading a migration from corporate legacy systems to cloud solutions where appropriate

  • Essential Physical Requirements:
    • Must be able to move freely between facilities.
    • Must be able to operate and manipulate a keyboard.
    • Light physical work may be required.
