Chief Plant Operator

Chesterfield County Government is seeking a Chief Plant Operator to direct the activities of employees engaged in the operation and maintenance of a state-of-the-art biological nutrient removal wastewater treatment facility. Duties of this position include: planning work schedules and assigning tasks to employees; monitoring and operating SCADA; reviewing laboratory data to ensure VPDES compliance; supervising training of operators; overseeing chemical orders and deliveries as needed; preparing reports as needed. Handle emergency calls after regular business hours, on call 24 hours. Perform other work as required.
Successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or GED; Virginia Class I wastewater license; six years of experience in wastewater treatment including two years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training/education (i.e. engineering or science degree) and experience. Ability to plan and direct the work of operational personnel; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; good professional judgment. Considerable knowledge of VPDES requirements. Troubleshooting skills related to wastewater treatment preferred. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of the treatment processes at both the Proctors Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Falling Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
