Communications Director/Legislative Aide

Montgomery County Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles (D-At Large) seeks an experienced and highly skilled Communications Director to effectively communicate with the public, media, and other stakeholders. This role offers a significant opportunity for growth and experience.This is a non-merit term position.Terms are defined in the Council Office, up to one year or at the discretion of the Council Member.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy that aligns with the Councilmember's priorities and goals while maintaining the highest level of transparency, accountability, and ethical standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage social media, website, and digital platforms to provide accurate and timely information.
  • Draft and edit speeches, press releases, and talking points to ensure effective communication and relationships with local media.
  • Coordinate media events, press conferences, and other public appearances.
  • Work closely with other Councilmember staff members, county government departments, elected officials, and community organizations to advance legislative initiatives and address community needs.
  • Conduct research on various legislative topics, compile data, and prepare reports for the Councilmember’s review.

The above is not an exhaustive list of duties. This position requires the ability to attend meetings or perform work at locations outside the office, including some evenings and weekends.

The anticipated salary range will be: $57,907 to $74,627.

Montgomery County Ethics Law: Except as provided by law or regulation, the County's "Public Employees" (which does not include employees of the Sheriff's office) are subject to the County's ethics law including the requirements to obtain advanced approval of any outside employment and the prohibitions on certain outside employment. Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in legislative/policy research or professional-level experience, preferably with a background in communications.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Equivalency:An equivalent combination of education and experience may be submitted. If you believe your experience is comparable to a Bachelor's Degree, please provide a detailed explanation in your application.
