Job Description

The Newhouse School has hired a new Director for the Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship (IDJC). The new Director has a full agenda and strategic initiatives to advance the School’s efforts in these areas. This staff position is essential to supporting the communications, marketing and social media needs of the IDJC in Washington, D.C.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 3-5 years experience in support of communications, marketing and social media strategy for an organization.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • Savvy social media practitioner with communications planning and messaging and media relations experience.
  • Branding/marketing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Communication Planning & Strategy: liaison for comprehensive communications strategy for the Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship to the university, Newhouse and Maxwell school’s communications teams.

  • Build and distinguish the Institute’s brand in a busy think tank environment in Washington, D.C.
  • Plan messaging across all media, producing content in various forms for distribution on media channels (i.e., writing press releases, news articles, website content, podcast scripts, feature articles, etc.)
  • Participate in developing strategies for positioning the Institute among news organizations, government and civics groups, and the public at large.
  • Devise ways to build an audience for the Institutes programs and research.
  • Work with Advancement, Alumni Relations, and other external relations offices at SU to promote and engage with prospective partners, donors, and alumni.

Media Partnerships: coordinate developing and executing media partnerships for the Institute.

  • Media coverage for professors, events, research, etc.
  • Managing press inquiries, attendance at events, etc.
  • Developing/creating media distribution and internal mailing lists.

Event & Program Communications

  • Partner with Director in planning communication strategies for the Institute’s events, programming and research activities.
  • Coordinate coverage on multiple distribution outlets to bring each event to life on various media platforms; provide live event coverage on social media, etc.

Social Media Channels: responsible for developing and executing a social media strategy for the Institute.

  • identifying all relevant social media channels/apps and setting up Institute accounts.
  • Creating content and a regular posting schedule to maximize exposure for the Institute.
  • Assess and evaluate effective of messaging and adjust for maximum reach.
