The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a Creative Manager to join the Communications Team to play a pivotal role in leading creative strategy and services to support the School’s mission and vision. This new position will report to the Director of Communications and will collaborate closely with the Communications Team and School leadership on initiatives that build and strengthen the institution’s evolving brand and reputation.
The Creative Manager will set institutional design and visual brand standards for the School, including digital, print, and social ecosystems. They will create, vet, and safeguard effective visual design that aligns with the School’s brand, specifically its online presence. The Creative Manager will serve as the creative lead for print and multimedia projects across the School and serve as design lead for the institution’s website and social media channels.
Candidates must possess both strategic and conceptual thinking skills, staying up-to-date with emerging technologies, industry trends, and customer insights to shape and guide creative vision. The Creative Manager is required to exercise exceptional professional judgment in a high-demand, high-volume setting, offering solutions that meet objectives and ensure timely, budget-conscious project delivery.
Responsibilities
Anticipated hiring range: $80,000-$90,000
Benefits Include: The choice between 3 different health plans; vision and dental insurance; life insurance; benefits savings accounts; starting with 22 days of paid time off a year in addition to 12 or more paid holidays; 8 weeks of paid parental leave; short term disability; up to $5,250 after your 6 months of employment for combined use of tuition toward a degree-seeking program or up to$2,000 for professional development including classes, certification training and conferences; and more!

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Responsibilities
- Leads and implements creative strategy and design across the School.
- Develops creative products and projects including web, social media, video, email marketing, PowerPoint, and print through visual design, multimedia, animation, and illustration.
- Establishes a distinct brand identity that builds upon existing identifiable assets but that align with the UVA brand ecosystem.
- Oversees the creation, distribution, and maintenance of open-source assets including logos, brand art, templates, photography, video, and usage guidelines.
- Oversees creative intake requests while tracking project components, production timelines, and any vendor relations to ensure project specifications and met within budget and time limitations.
- Stays up-to-date on creative industry trends and emerging technologies while also providing training to the Communications Team and other units as needed.
- Collaborates with the web developer and social media team to ensure online content is digitally accessible in accordance with University and federal guidelines.
- Develops relationships with creative staff across the University and manages all external creative, design, and multimedia vendor relations.
- Bachelor’s degree in visual design, digital arts or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum five years of design experience, including branding, visual identity, web, multimedia, and print design.
- Proficiency with Apple OS, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Expertise in design fundamentals, the ability to think creatively and provide customer-centric solutions that are timely and budget-conscience.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment while managing multiple priorities and projects.
- Communicates effectively to a variety of audiences and values diverse experiences, styles, backgrounds, and perspectives.
- Knowledge of digital and print design principles, including accessible design principles and application.
- Photography, videography, and other multimedia experience.
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS, UI/UX design, Slate, and related tools.
- Knowledge of web and digital strategies and standards to improve communications, usability and user experience, and accessibility.
- Knowledge of print production processes and best practices.
- Motion and animation experience.
