Criminalist I (DNA Section)

Overview

This is a provisional appointment.

Under the direct supervision of Criminalists II-IV within the Crime Lab, analyze items of evidence.

This position is in the DNA Section of the Laboratory. Under the direction of the Technical Leader and Supervisor of the DNA Section, performs chemical, biochemical and genetic analyses of evidence for the purpose of identification and genetic characterization of physiological fluids using DNA typing methods (PCR). Before assuming casework responsibilities, the Criminalist shall complete a comprehensive DNA analyst training program.

Responsibilities

  • Processes crime scenes and vehicles with supervision.
  • Performs DNA analysis on casework samples including extraction, real time quantitation, PCR amplification and genotyping using capillary electrophoresis.
  • Performs data analysis and report writing, evaluation of casework profiles for CODIS eligibility, and technical review of other analysts' data.
  • Provides effective expert testimony in court.
  • Contributes to DNA validation projects.
  • Maintains laboratory records and prepares written technical reports of analysis.
  • Maintains quality assurance and quality control records within the DNA Section.
  • Contributes to lab activities to maintain the lab’s accreditation status.
  • Provides assistance and training to assigned staff.
  • Evaluates and implements new scientific techniques.
  • May evaluate evidence at crime scenes.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • The analyst shall have a bachelor’s (or its equivalent) or an advanced degree in biology-, chemistry-, or forensic science-related area. The analyst shall have successfully completed coursework (graduate or undergraduate level: 3 courses totaling at least 9 cumulative semester hours of laboratory and/or lecture based coursework) covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. The analyst shall have also successfully completed coursework (graduate or undergraduate level) covering statistics and/or population genetics.
  • Master's degree in a natural science, forensic science, or closely related field preferred.
  • To verify relevant coursework, college transcripts must be submitted with application/ resume.
  • Certification in appropriate discipline (e.g. ABC) preferred.
  • No professional experience is required. Preference will be given to applicants with one (1) year laboratory experience or six months of applicable laboratory experience and a graduate degree that includes relevant laboratory coursework.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Excellent oral and written communications and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications, and Google Suite.
