Database Administrator

Position Title: Database Administrator

Location: Picatinny Arsenal, NJ

Clearance Level required: Secret

Responsibilities (including But Not Limited To)

  • Database Design and Implementation:
    • Design and develop database architectures.
    • Install and configure database management systems.
    • Plan and implement data storage solutions.
  • Database Maintenance:
    • Monitor database performance and optimize queries.
    • Perform regular backups and restore data as needed.
    • Manage database replication and clustering.
  • Security Management:
    • Implement database security measures.
    • Manage user access and permissions.
    • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations.
  • Data Management:
    • Ensure data integrity and consistency.
    • Perform data migrations and transformations.
    • Manage database schemas and data dictionaries.
  • Performance Tuning:
    • Analyze and resolve database performance issues.
    • Optimize database configuration and queries.
    • Monitor system resources and plan for capacity.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Diagnose and fix database errors and issues.
    • Provide support for database-related problems.
    • Work with developers to resolve application-related database issues.
  • Automation and Scripting:
    • Develop scripts for automating database tasks.
    • Use tools for database automation and management.
    • Implement and maintain automated monitoring systems.
  • Disaster Recovery Planning:
    • Develop and test backup and recovery plans.
    • Ensure data recovery processes are effective.
    • Implement failover mechanisms and high availability solutions.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work with IT and development teams on database-related projects.
    • Communicate database changes and updates to relevant stakeholders.
    • Provide training and support to users and developers.
  • Documentation:
    • Maintain documentation of database configurations and procedures.
    • Keep records of database changes and updates.
    • Document best practices and standards for database management.
Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree: While not required, a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is preferred. Some may have degrees in business administration with a focus on information systems.
  • Advanced Degrees: While not required, a master’s degree in database management, information technology, or a related field can be advantageous.

Technical Skills

  • Database Management Systems (DBMS): Experience in one or more DBMS such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB.
  • SQL Proficiency: Knowledge of SQL (Structured Query Language) for database querying and management.
  • Database Design: Skills in designing database schemas, tables, and relationships.
  • Performance Tuning: Ability to optimize database performance and troubleshoot performance issues.
  • Backup and Recovery: Knowledge of backup and recovery techniques and tools.
  • Security: Understanding of database security measures and best practices.
  • Operating Systems: Familiarity with operating systems, particularly Linux, UNIX, and Windows.
  • Scripting: Experience with scripting languages like Python, Perl, or shell scripting for automation tasks.

Certifications

  • Database-Specific Certifications: Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, or MySQL Database Administrator.
  • General IT Certifications: Certifications like CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ are also advantageous.

Experience

  • Work Experience: Five (5) Years of relevant work experience in database administration, support, and management is required for the Senior DBA position. This often includes roles such as junior DBA, database developer, or systems administrator.
  • Hands-on Projects: Practical experience through projects, internships, or cooperative education programs.
