Director, Alumni Engagement DC

Job Description

Based in Washington, DC and reporting to the Exec Dir., Alumni Engagement Northeast, this role develops and implements alumni programs, volunteer opportunities, and philanthropic participation for the Baltimore Metro, DC Metro, and Northern VA region. This individual plans events that align with alumni engagement priorities, including those around student/recent graduate engagement, career services, affinity groups, and lifelong learning. The Director partners with colleagues based in colleges/schools/units on the development and implementation of programming that highlights programs, faculty, and other strategic priorities. S/He collaborates with colleagues in the regional advancement team, in efforts to cultivate and steward prospects and donors in the region through one-to-one engagement opportunities and regionally based cultivation events. They serve as a liaison to alumni volunteers in the region, including those associated with alumni groups and networks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience working in a complex higher education environment, including alumni engagement, donor relations, fundraising, program and/or event management.
  • Familiarity with Syracuse University and/or the Washington, D.C. region a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • REQUIRES ability to work non-business hours which may include nights, weekends and /or holiday.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact, discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, creativity, and demonstrated success in managing multiple projects.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
  • Time management and prioritization skills are needed for daily operations.
  • Experience with handling and tracking of program budgets.
  • Fundraising experience through all facets of the donor cultivation cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute alumni engagement programs for the DC Metro, Baltimore Metro, and Northern VA region. This individual plans alumni events that align with alumni engagement priorities, including those around student/recent graduate engagement, career services, affinity groups, and lifelong learning. Partner with colleagues based in colleges/schools/units on the development and implementation of programming that highlights programs, faculty, and other strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the regional advancement team, and in particular with the Executive Director, Mid-Atlantic Region, in efforts to cultivate and steward prospects and donors in the region. Conduct one-to-one engagement opportunities to qualify and cultivate prospects and make referrals to advancement colleagues, as appropriate. Support the execution of regionally based cultivation events, such as salon events hosted by key regional volunteers and/or donors; liaise as needed with alumni volunteers in the region, including leaders of groups/networks and program speakers.
  • Support volunteer engagement initiatives for the region, including strategies that support volunteer identification, cultivation, and stewardship; Serve as a liaison to regional club/group volunteers, through participation in meetings and events as needed.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the development and deployment of outreach strategies; oversee financial processes and procedures, including monthly budgetary projection process, in partnership with colleagues in OAEAG and AEA Budget and Finance Office; exercise responsibility for processes and procedures associated with university purchasing card; manage external vendor relationships as needed to support programmatic needs and goals.
  • Other duties as assigned, including service on Advancement and External Affairs and/or university committees as needed.
