Job Summary
The Respiratory Care Services Director is an individual who is responsible for supervising the daily activities and personnel of the Respiratory Care Services Department solving minor and immediate problems regarding therapy administration and working with physicians and nurses to coordinate Respiratory Patient Care. The RT manager is a key communication liaison between Practitioners and Department Directors, as well as between the Respiratory Care Services Department and other hospital personnel. As a Practitioner, ensures that quality, timely and appropriate care is provided to patients of any age including neonatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric through patient assessment and treatment, through implementation of quality improvement, utilization review and clinical education programs.

Job Requirements
Minimum EducationGraduate of a Joint Review Committee for Respiratory Therapy Education (JRCRTE)approved program of Respiratory Care preferred
Required SkillsCertifications:Basic Life Support (BLS) current requiredAdvanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) requiredPediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) requiredNeonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) required
Licenses:Licenses by the North Carolina Board of Respiratory CareRRT credentials
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Minimum Work ExperienceMinimum of 5 years’ experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner, RRT requiredPrevious Supervisory experience preferred
Essential Functions
Fulfills obligation of Department need
Assists in implementation of the philosophy, objectives, standards policies and procedures for the Respiratory Care Services
Participates in implementing planned changes and activities to improve Respiratory Care delivery
Assists in maintaining the smooth functioning of the Respiratory Care Services:a. Ensures flow of communication from and to staff and Directorb. Maintain and assist in ordering supplies and equipment for the departmentc. Monitors services of the department and addresses problems directly or with assistance from the Directord. Rents equipment from outside sources as needed and authorizes equipment repairse. Participates in quality assurance program and staff competency reviewsf. Does timecards
Uses chain of control to promptly address clinical issues, departmental operation concerns and unresolved difficult interaction with others
Assures initiation and follow-up of risk identification reports, patient/family or physician complaints and notifies Department Director in a timely manner
Appropriately identifies performance problems of staff members, performs counseling if appropriate and completes documentation as required
Serves as preceptor for new staff and clinical site students, assuring completion of all orientation and skills checklists, identifies learning needs and plans training
Works to resolve difficult interactions with physician, co-workers, visitors, patients or personnel from other departments
Administration of therapies as prescribed by a physician and according to the standard procedure described in the Departmental Policy and procedure Manual in these areas:a. Oxygen therapyb. Aerosol therapyc. BIPAP and CPAPd. Continuous Mechanical Ventilatione. Incentive Spirometryf. Chest physiotherapyg. Oro/Naso-pharyngeal suctioningh. Tracheo-bronchial suctioning and tracheostomy carei. Airway management/assessmentj. Cardio-pulmonary resuscitationk. High Flow therapyl. Pulmonary Function testingm. EEG /Electroencephalographyn. Arterial Blood Gas drawso. Intubation Assist
Incorporates knowledge of patients functional and developmental age into patient care activities
Patient monitoring: must be able to identify side effects of therapy or life-threatening symptoms and take appropriate actions
Equipment monitoring: must be able to assemble, test prior to patient use and monitor equipment for proper function, report any defects. Must be able to perform calibration and sterilization of equipment
Documentation of patient administered therapies, side effects and or results. Documentation departmentally of shift therapies administered and statistical information for hospital records or patient charges
Handling and changing of medical gas cylinders: must be able to identify various types of medical gases and the proper administration of these gases. Must know the proper method of transporting cylinders and proper storage techniques
Responsible for employee yearly evaluations
Formal instruction of patient and their families in Respiratory Care
Observes established policies and procedures including confidentiality, safety, infection control and other environmental regulations
Participates in Performance Improvement (CQI)
Participates in Hospital Safety programs
Provides oversight to the data collections process
Assists in developing and implementing unit specific policies/standards to define unit function
Assures that all employee licenses and registry requirements are met
Coordinates and integrates services within Respiratory with other departments
Plans, directs, and monitors the scheduling, budgeting, and utilization of qualified, competent person to provide services
Ensures Respiratory & Sleep records are retained according to state and national regulations
