EHS Safety Officer

Basic Function/Nature and Scope
The Safety Officer reports to the Director of Environment, Health, and Safety. The position assists management and staff in the development and implementation of occupational, environment, health, and safety procedures and policies in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Essential Functions

Performs project and facility reviews, provides safety training, and advises management and staff on safety matters. Communicates with internal and external clients to ensure program and facility meets compliance with regulations. Identifies potential problems and opportunities that may affect work.

Assists in the day-to-day operations of the environment, health, and safety (EHS) program by monitoring compliance with safety procedures and regulations, including the implementation of safety and emergency response plans. Perform site inspections to assess compliance with safety and health program requirements and maintain records. Ensures that safety-related equipment is inspected, maintained and/or certified as appropriate.

Develops safety plans for laboratory, facility, and field sites complying with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines to include, but not limited to, an emergency response plan and a natural disaster plan. Reviews test and/or work plans, SOPs, protocols, for appropriate safety controls. Contributes to selection and design of new facilities and equipment, proposals, plans, and reports. Recommends safety specifications and protective devices for equipment and fixed structures.

Coordinate and conduct work area and risk assessments, job safety analysis and hazard surveys, and program evaluations to determine the presence of hazardous conditions, such as noise exposure, chemical exposure, indoor air quality, confined space, and ventilation. Evaluate hazardous conditions and recommend engineering controls, administrative controls, and/or personal protective equipment.

Performs incident and near miss incident investigations, root cause analysis, and effectively communicate recommended corrective/preventive action options to management to prevent recurrence efforts. Prepares, reviews, and analyzes incident reports and other special reports as required.

Member of emergency response and hazardous material spill teams.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (B.S/B.A.) from an accredited college or university in science, math, engineering, science-based technology, safety, industrial hygiene, or environmental health; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2 years environmental, occupational health, and safety (EHS) experience anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, controlling and confirming protection from those environmental stressors in, or arising from, the workplace that may result in injury, illness, impairment, or affect the well-being of workers and members of the community.
- Occupational, Environment, Health, and Safety certification(s) a plus (e.g. CIH, CSP)
- Work experience and knowledge of laboratory safety; chemical, pharmaceutical, and/or Process Safety Management (PSM)/Risk Management Program (RMP) industries a plus
