About Us: The Montclair Center Business Improvement District (MCBID) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the economic and community development of Montclair Center. The mission of the Montclair Center BID is to create a visually appealing, prosperous, and inclusive downtown through continuous cleaning and beautification, programming, marketing, economic development, and advocacy. The MCBID is a Nationally Accredited Main Street Community that partners with businesses, nonprofits, landlords and government to make Montclair Center a vibrant place to eat, work, shop, live and play.

Position Overview: The next Executive Director will be a visionary leader driving economic vitality within Montclair Center.  This role requires exceptional management skills, a passion for community development, and an aptitude for developing strong stakeholder relationships. The Executive Director will serve as the face of the MCBID, collaborate on the development of its strategic direction, oversee programs, and manage finances and overall administration. The Executive Director will closely coordinate with and report to the Board of Directors. 


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Community Engagement:
  • Advance strategic and tactical goals through community engagement.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the MCBID, representing the organization at meetings, media engagements, and large public events.
  • Build and nurture strong relationships with Montclair’s businesses, property owners, government officials, community organizations, and partners.
  • Develop and implement marketing, public relations and communication strategies to promote the district.
  1. Placemaking, Event Planning and Management:
  • Create a positive experience for visitors, building on the district’s reputation as a destination of choice in northern New Jersey and within the NYC metropolitan area. 
  • Collaborate on events to draw visitors and residents and build the Montclair Center brand.
  • Oversee event planning, implementation, and development of initiatives that enhance the vitality of Montclair Center.
  1. Economic Development:
  • Attract and retain businesses.
  • Support local businesses and property owners.
  • Advocate for stakeholders.
  • Conduct research and gather data to drive informed decision making. 
  • Act as a source of information for business and property owners.
  • Recognize positive opportunities that foster the synergy between the district and the MCBID, and support strategically aligned district-wide initiatives.
  1. Operational Management:
  • Oversee daily operations including budgeting, financial management, and reporting.
  • Manage MCBID staff, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  1. Grant Management and Fundraising:
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities including grants, sponsorships, and partnerships.
  • Serve as a steward and fiscal agent for public-private partnerships
  1. Strategic Leadership:
  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic vision, brand, and direction for the MCBID.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to set goals, objectives, and policies.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, both persuasive and empathetic as a public speaker and one-on-one. They must be able to advocate MCBID positions, facilitate meetings, and shape wide ranging constituent positions into consensus. The position requires a strategic leader who is financially savvy and experienced in management. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and five years in a leadership role are preferred. Passion for downtown revitalization and community engagement is essential. We are looking for a creative and innovative thinker. Technological literacy and strong organizational skills are important. Experience in fundraising, grant writing, public relations, and marketing is beneficial. Our Executive Director must have the flexibility to regularly work outside standard business hours, including evenings and weekends. Support and oversight of our district-wide events requires the capability of working outdoors over a significant period, sometimes in poor weather conditions. Candidates with previous BID/SID experience, entrepreneurial/small business experience, or non-profit management are encouraged to apply. Familiarity with Montclair Center is a big plus.

Compensation:

Salary range: $90,000 to $115,000



Benefits: You will be entitled to reimbursement of your reasonable and ordinary business expenses and to paid vacation, holidays, and sick days. You will be eligible to participate in the BID healthcare insurance plan, under which the BID will contribute 100% of your individual healthcare coverage. The BID expressly reserves the right to change the healthcare benefit plans and programs it offers to its employees.
