The ideal candidate is able to balance a fast-paced digital and print news environment. This person is focused on quality journalism while working aggressively to lead coverage in our communities and deliver thoughtful, impactful coverage and analysis essential to the communities we serve.

This executive editor intrinsically knows the importance of diversity and inclusion in our work, and ensures everyone feels valued, accepted and included in our workplace.

This executive editor will work collaboratively with other newsrooms in Texas, combining on coverage when needed.

Responsibilities Include

  • Upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity and credibility while strongly supporting the First Amendment.
  • Providing exemplary leadership in helping to develop and execute strategic digital and other plans.
  • Leading change management efforts that include strong communication of strategic initiatives, purpose, vision and culture.
  • Growing digital audience and engagement across multiple platforms.
  • Being responsive to the needs of the staff and community; responsive to the needs of the product; and responsive in the speediest sense of the word.
  • Attracting, retaining and nurturing top talent.
  • Managing, motivating and inspiring staff toward excellence.
  • Playing an active role in implementing new corporate initiatives and ensuring those initiatives are fully optimized and successful.
  • Ensuring your staff understands the company’s mission and priorities and their role in achieving it.
  • Be a champion of diversity – with the understanding that diversity includes everyone and drives customer and operational innovation.
  • Collaborate with other departments in the development and implementation of multi-platform products to grow audience and engagement.

Qualifications

  • Strong work ethic and a positive, generous, and encouraging management style.
  • Ability and willingness to help set, implement and manage performance standards.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree, or equivalent experience, in journalism or related field.
  • An abiding sense of urgency and immediacy.
  • Proven record of strong reporting, writing, and/or editing, with at least five years’ experience in a digital or print daily newsroom.
  • Knowledge of local, regional and state news along with experience in investigative journalism, public service journalism and data journalism.
