This safety sensitive position is responsible for the day-to-day management and activities of the fleet department by efficiently providing support in a positive and respectful manner and working with a team, including mechanics who maintain and repair a large fleet of trucks, machinery, and heavy equipment across all districts and garages. Strong leadership skills, a technical background, and the ability to multi-task and work at a fast pace are required.

  • Lead, manage, and supervise fleet maintenance operations, including evaluating job performance for all fleet mechanics and the fleet administrator(s), completing annual performance reviews, and providing ongoing feedback.
  • Provide management with requested information by using fleet software and or other appropriate means.
  • Create reports and analyze fleet expenses to assist in budget preparation and present suggestions where improvements can be made.
  • Communicate fleet information proactively and effectively company wide.
  • Ensure the preventive maintenance (PM) schedule is adhered to; collaborate with field management for completion.
  • Monitor the PM program to ensure it meets all required specifications and is cost effective.
  • Track warranty work completed by Eastern garage and vehicles sent to dealer for warranty work; ensure appropriate suppliers are invoiced.
  • Travel regularly to fleet garages and off-site facilities.
  • Manage deadlines, due dates, and test dates for inspections, registrations, visual leakage (VK) tests, crane inspections, hydrostatic pressure tests, and meter calibrations.
  • Review DOT Roadside inspection violations and follow up with repair orders.
  • Respond when appropriate to fleet accidents and act as emergency respondent liaison for fleet vehicle expertise.
  • Manage the current process for parts inventory in garages.
  • Audit vehicle inspections periodically to assure adherence to company standards.
  • Create agendas and lead regularly scheduled mechanics’ meetings.
  • Identify and collaboratively resolve technology needs in the garages with relevant IT and Business Systems personnel.
  • Maintain a proficient working knowledge of and consistently enforce Eastern’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Cross-train in Fleet Administrator functions to provide departmental support when necessary.
  • Assist in ensuring vehicle compliance on local, State, and Federal levels.
  • Assist in coordinating unscheduled vehicle maintenance with field managers.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with Regional and Operations Managers regarding fleet needs, conditions, and changes in respective locations.
  • Create work order templates for new work order types.
  • Facilitate training for mechanics for basic computer functions.
  • Be receptive to and competently use new technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
