The History Intern at Road Scholar will assist Road Scholar’s PR Director and Communications Director in researching the history of the organization in preparation for our 50th anniversary in 2025.

In this role, you will…

  • Use primary and secondary sources like newspapers and archival documents to research Elderhostel and Road Scholar history over the past 50 years.
  • Document the organization’s most meaningful milestones in a historical timeline.
  • Organize the Road Scholar online archive.
  • Develop creative investigative skills as you locate the descendants of original Elderhostel participants and reach out to them to gather photos or personal diaries for our archives.
  • Interview past participants to collect stories about the organization’s history and produce blog articles and/or PR pitches using those stories.
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation that tells the story of Elderhostel/Road Scholar.

You will learn or practice…

  • How to discover stories through data analysis
  • Using primary and secondary sources and online tools like newspapers.com for historical research
  • Conducting interviews
  • Storytelling through news and blog articles and PowerPoint presentations

You may be perfect for this role if you are…

  • Current Junior or Senior majoring in History or another related major
  • A strong writer and talented storyteller (a double major or minor in writing is a PLUS)
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • An independent, diligent, self-motivated multi-tasker
  • Adept at doing research, with the ability to present results in a clear and concise way.

What are the internship details?

This internship runs 16 consecutive weeks during the summer between September 2024 and December 2024, subject to the student’s schedule. The internship is remote, 20 hours/week with flexible weekly schedule during business hours. A flat stipend of $3,840.00 is paid for this internship. The stipend is paid at 50% halfway through the internship and the other 50% after successful completion of the internship. College credit where applicable.
