Horticulture Supervisor - Full Time

Job Description

Minimum pay is $20.65/hr; additional compensation can be considered for candidates with higher amounts of experience than the minimum requirements. Full Time: a position working 32+ hours per week.

This is a first level leadership position. The purpose of this position is to provide the Horticulture department crews with day-to-day supervision of task and effective hands on leadership of crew in their duties. This position is also responsible for maintaining inventories, appropriate records, purchasing supplies, approving and coding invoices, and maintaining the design intents of their assigned areas.

Schedule is generally 7am-3:30pm with occasional weekends.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Supervises, performs and assist crew members in skilled horticultural tasks including but not limited to: installing and maintaining turf and plants in greenhouses, gardens, interiors, and landscapes.
  • Plans and leads assigned crews in daily tasks and maintains safe, efficient work routines.
  • Coordinates, plans, and prioritizes daily, weekly, and long-range projects with manager.
  • Complies with and stays informed on latest safety procedures related to duties.
  • Assists guests in a proactive, positive, courteous manner.
  • Works in an efficient, productive manner with no supervision
  • Follows instructions written and verbal.
  • Operates basic hand tools and motorized tools to include trimmers, mowers, clippers, saws and specialized equipment such as lifts and tractors as needed.. Trains staff in the safe operations of the equipment.
  • Orders necessary supplies within budget parameters and approves / codes invoices as appropriate..
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma. A two-year college degree and/or 4 years related on the job training. Industry acknowledged certifications and designations are preferred. B.S in Horticultural field preferred.
  • At least 4 years of related horticultural experience. The ideal candidate will have had prior experience working in a public garden responsible for plant care/maintenance. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of turf, annuals, perennials, herbaceous plants, and/or roses. candidates must be able to identify plants and proactively trouble shoot on care.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team as well as work independently with no supervision.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing world class guest service (internal and external).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and be proactive; must be comfortable with and able to take initiative as appropriate.
  • Ability to become WPS certified within 10 days of hire.
  • Acquire a Category L pesticide license within 1 year of hire.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time; must be able to kneel, stoop, bend, reach below and overhead.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding as needed.
  • Ability to safely operate small equipment and machinery (e.g. edgers, mowers, etc.). and specialize equipment such as tractors and lifts as appropriate.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather with fluctuations in temperature and conditions.
  • Ability to work safely with and around pesticides and other chemicals.
