HVAC Refrigeration Specialist Advanced

Introduction

The Department of Health Services (DHS), Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI) is currently recruiting for an HVAC Refrigeration Specialist Advanced. MMHI is located on the north side of Madison and offers a beautiful campus environment, convenient free parking and an onsite workout facility. MMHI is an inpatient psychiatric facility, with one outpatient program, specializing in serving patients with complex psychiatric conditions, often combined with certain problem behaviors. A secure setting to meet the legal and behavioral needs of our patients is provided. MMHI is an integral part of the entire Wisconsin mental health service delivery system.

Work hours are scheduled during first shift. This position is required to be on a stand-by schedule that is on call seven days a week. Seven (7) day assignment may include weekends and holidays and will require response to any afterhours maintenance needs.

Position Summary

As the HVAC/Refrigeration Specialist-Advanced, you will perform a variety of skilled maintenance and repair work for twenty-five MMHI buildings and the steam distribution systems for all grounds at MMHI and one leading to Central Wisconsin Center (CWC). You will inspect, maintain, repair, perform preventive maintenance, and perform minor installations on HVAC/Refrigeration equipment.

Salary Information

The starting pay is between $27.17 to $31.27 per hour, (approximately between $56,500 and $65,00 per year), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. This position is in pay schedule and range 03/15.

Job Details

All applicants who may be appointed to this position will be required to allow DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.

All appointees will be required to receive a TB test, which will be administered by the facility or medical personnel directed by the facility within 30 days of the start date.

DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.

This position has physical requirements which may include but are not limited to lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, twisting, crawling, and working on the applicant's feet for long periods of time. Applicants will be required to pass a physical evaluation to assess these requirements.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:

  • HVAC certification and EPA 608 for refrigerant recovery, reclaiming and recycling. If not certified, certifications must be obtained within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy** described below to drive a state vehicle. In order to become authorized to drive a state vehicle, you must hold a valid Wisconsin Driver's License or have the ability to obtain one by appointment effective date.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime or extra hours as needed.
  • Experience or training installing, troubleshooting, or repairing heating and air conditioning systems, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Experience or training with repairs to household appliance, minor electrical repairs, mechanical machines, clearing plugged drains, sinks, and toilets, etc.

Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:

  • Experience installing, maintaining, or adjusting pneumatic HVAC controls and related components.
  • Experience repairing and adjusting mechanical devices (e.g., valves, booster pumps, fans, compressors, condensers, switches, etc.).
  • Experience operating the computerized building maintenance system (Metasys) to control various pieces of HVAC equipment.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing mechanical and electrically operated locking hardware (e.g., detention door hardware, sliding gate hardware, etc.).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy. State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy:
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Minimum of two year's driving experience.
  • Must be 18 years of age of older.

Additionally, the driving record must not reflect the following conditions:

  • Three or more moving violations and/or at fault accidents in the past two years.
  • An OWI or DUI violation within the past 12 months.
  • A suspension or revocation of the driver's license.
