Context Of The Job

The Tavares Lab (https://tavareslab.bio.udel.edu/) in the Department of Biological Sciences (https://www.bio.udel.edu/) at the University of Delaware is seeking a Limited Term Researcher. The Tavares Lab studies craniofacial development and the genetic causes of craniofacial birth defects. The Limited Term Researcher will be responsible to manage the laboratory and perform experiments under the guidance of Dr. Tavares. This position offers the opportunity for motivated candidates to gain technical and leadership skills in a growing lab at UD.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the laboratory (inventory and order of lab supplies and equipment, and track new orders of equipment and supplies).
  • Plan, organize, and conduct research using cell culture and animal models (mouse and Xenopus).
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment (centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, and gel documentation systems).
  • Maintain the mouse colony and perform genotyping.
  • Assist with the Xenopus (frog) colony and experiments using frog eggs.
  • Train and provide technical assistance to students and other trainees when necessary.
  • Execute cell and molecular biology experiments such as DNA extraction, PCR, cloning, western blotting, immunostaining and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Contribute to a team environment, help to create and maintain a positive and supportive laboratory environment, and be enthusiastic about learning new techniques.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings.
  • Comply with Department of Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA, and biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents; promote workplace safety.

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related field.
  • Candidates with prior experience in cell and molecular biology (PCR, cloning), animal models, cell culture, histology, and microscopy are encouraged to apply.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, knowledge and skill working with Microsoft software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Enthusiastic about learning new techniques, as well excellent team-work attitude are also expected.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people having varied levels of technical knowledge and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.

Environmental/Occupational Exposures

  • Work environment may include working in a cold room for short periods of time.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Exposure to rodent animal models on a regular basis

Special Requirements

  • With or without assistance, must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials.
  • The ability to measure laboratory materials.
  • On occasion be able to work various or long hours due to experiment timing
