JOB TITLE: HVAC / Heating and Air Conditioning Mechanic (Maintenance III)

Job Summary
Plans layout, installs, repairs, and services commercial and residential environmental control systems and equipment.
Qualifications
High school diploma, three years related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Valid South Carolina driver’s license
Valid Refrigeration Certification card
Valid Reclaim license
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers and employees or organization
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages. Ratios, and proportions to practical situations
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District Administration may find appropriate and acceptable
Essential Duties
Installs, inspects and repairs refrigeration and heating equipment for preserving food, making ice, cooling water, air conditioning, and heating in the school district facilities
Troubleshoots refrigeration, air conditioning and heating equipment to detect and correct causes of malfunction(s)
Dismantles equipment to gain access to, remove and repair or replace defective parts. Performs complete overhaul of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating equipment including filter replacement
Resolders joints and repacks and replaces defective valves and component parts of the environmental control systems and equipment. Uses the proper brazing and soldering techniques
Tests the efficiency of systems using the various meters, thermometers and test equipment of the trade and makes adjustments to the system and controls to ensure maximum performance
Installs refrigeration machinery, A/C/ equipment, heat pumps, water coolers, heaters and refrigerators
Reads and interprets blueprints, electrical control diagrams and manufacturer’s specifications in the service and maintenance of the equipment
Cuts, punches, flanges, shears, and solders sheet metal ducts and parts
Cements insulation in place over finished piping or tubing
Passes electrical wire through conduit, splices wire connections, and tapes wire
Assembles sheet metal components of prefabricated furnaces
Complies with all the regulations concerning the use, handling, charging, reclaiming and disposal of refrigerates
Lubricates fans, motors, and control units
Washes, cleans and maintains vehicles. Tools and equipment in good condition and uses all tools and equipment carefully and as instructed
Operates small power tools as needed, such as drills, saws and the like.
Troubleshoots and completes work order in a timely and effective manner
Responds to work requests in the shortest time possible of notifies requesting department of any delays
Performs repairs with high quality and effective work practices and always applies safety principles on all work performed
Rarely requires review and rework by supervisor or other craftsperson in order to get work orders completed properly
Performs preventive maintenance on equipment, systems and facilities serving department, administrative staff, students and the public
Performs all steps of procedures thoroughly
Takes initiative to suggest new or modified procedures where appropriate to improve maintenance or reliability
Completes procedures within time limits and expectations set by the department
Always applies safety principles on all work performed
Maintains acceptable attendance and tardiness standards as set by the department
Demonstrates a professional manner in action and attitude when providing services, and works toward completing department goals and objectives
Acknowledges all communications from administration, staff, students and public, and explains unavailability to respond to requests if necessary
Demonstrates commitment to work by follow-ups on work orders to meet our customers’ expectations
Conducts self in a professional manner during department meetings providing input to improve the services of the department
Keeps supervisor informed of work progress and problems encountered
Completes required paperwork such as work orders, daily time sheets, invoice tracking, etc. on a daily basis
Interacts positively with fellow workers and shares experience and knowledge
Participates in educational programs and training classes to increase technical, safety and job skills
Uses time productively and adhere to Board of Education, District and Department policies, procedures and rules
Lifts and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds
Supervisor may assign other duties and responsibilities as needed.
