Position Summary
The State Pre-College Enrichment Program (S-PREP) is a free high school and college preparation program for 7th -12th grade students who reside in New York City. The objective of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented minority practitioners in healthcare and STEM professions. This opportunity designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine or related STEM fields. The program offers academic enrichment courses that are designed to prepare students for success in math and science. The program also offers career development workshops, college counseling services, field trips and college tours. For the program year, SPREP will be hosted from October through May.
Tutors for the SPREP program will provide support for middle and high school students who are enrolled in math and science courses that are offered by the program. Participating students come from diverse backgrounds and generally have varying academic skillsets. Ideal candidates for the SPREP Tutor positions are those interested in working with students who fit the demographics previously described. Course offerings will include, but may not be limited to Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry and Pre-calculus. Tutoring sessions are generally held on weekday evenings from 5pm to 8pm and on Saturday afternoons.
Responsibilities
Tutors report to the Program Administrators for the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Providing tutoring services for SPREP students in small groups or 1:1 sessions
- Meeting with students to review homework assignments in respective math/science subject area(s)
- Identifying specific topics and/subject content that present challenges for students
- Assisting students with test preparation
- Providing feedback regarding students’ performance for bi-annual evaluations
- Providing recommendations for program improvements
- Completing administrative/clerical duties as assigned
- High School Diploma
- Previous teaching experience is extremely helpful
- Education and training in science and/or mathematics
- Demonstration of leadership and organization skills
