Part-Time Single Term Instructor

Job Summary

The Office of Field Services in the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education invites applications for part-time education field supervisor with experience and background in Secondary Education, Special Education, Early Childhood Intervention Specialist, Middle Childhood Education, Early Childhood, Primary Education, Music Education, TESOL or World Language. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education and have 5 current teaching years and be able to work with college students in their specialization.

The responsibilities of a supervisor include aiding field experience interns in developing and improving their teaching skills, providing objective descriptions of intern’s abilities, observing the intern in the classroom at least 4 to 6 times during a semester, and holding at least two conferences during the semester with the student and the mentor teacher. A supervisor may also be involved in collaboration with faculty seminar leaders to support student development in small group seminars and/or be able to hold individual seminars to support student development. Collaboration with mentor teachers is required to monitor the development of the student.

In addition, the supervisor will grade student’s work, produce letters of recommendation, and possibly produce outstanding student teacher letters if applicable.

The position is a part-time position that includes mileage and a per student salary. The supervisor is able to schedule observations on their own but will need to go out to the schools as often as necessary to understand a student’s abilities. Mileage will be paid based on the current government rate.

The University is opening this posting for the purposes of establishing a pool of candidates, from which to select part-time instructor candidates.

Throughout the academic year, individuals may be contacted by the department to further discuss positions available, on an as needed, semester by semester basis.

Service as a part-time single term instructor does not accrue tenure rights. Part-time single term instructors serve by the mutual agreement expressed in each successive contract executed and are engaged to teach at the convenience of the university.

A part-time single term instructor shall not have teaching responsibilities exceeding nine credit hours per semester, and no other responsibilities such as to accrue to full-time faculty.

Minimum Qualifications

Part-time single term instructor shall possess at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent (which may include appropriate licensure, certificate, etc.) in the field in which the supervisor is engaged to teach. Continuation of an appointee’s services during successive (not necessarily consecutive) academic terms requires satisfactory supervisor evaluations.

  • 5+ current years of teaching in a K-12 setting
  • Proven knowledge of state standards, RESA, and OTES
  • Proven knowledge of lesson planning, classroom management, conflict management, and differentiation in the classroom
  • Must be student focused
  • Reliable transportation and valid Drivers License
  • Ability to build rapport with college-age students
  • Proven excellent communication skills
  • Current valid state teaching certificate
  • Proven ability to coach students to use best practices in the classroom
  • A well versed understanding of urban teaching environment
