City of Virginia Beach

Police School Guard

City of Virginia Beach Virginia, United States

Assignment

The responsibility of police school crossing guards is to ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicles within designated school zones and crossing areas. They work part-time, typically in 30-minute shifts for each assigned school zone. Depending on availability and the distance between zones, guards may work multiple shifts per day. The school crossing guard position is divided into two categories: permanent and substitute. Permanent guards have specific assigned school zones, while substitute guards fill vacancies and may become permanent when openings arise.

Personnel must stay informed of work-related information through city email accounts, and short notice availability may also be communicated via text message. School crossing guards are required to complete all assigned training modules through our online portals, Power DMS and Taleo. Access to the VBtime application is essential, as guards need to verify the accuracy of their bi-monthly timecards, which are managed by the program coordinator.

Requirements

Applicants for the School Crossing Guard position must pass an interview and undergo a police background investigation, in addition to being physically and mentally capable of performing their duties. These duties include standing and walking while holding a stop sign, having good eyesight and hearing to identify hazards, while possessing effective communication skills and a professional demeanor. They must work in all weather conditions and without interruption. Check their city email on a regular basis. Respond to text and phone calls as needed. While on duty, they are required to wear only the uniform provided by the City, which must be kept in good condition and not altered in any way.
