Senior Battery Design Engineer


USA Tech Recruitment are working closely with an exciting battery company, based in Cambridge, who are looking for a talented Senior Battery Design Engineer to join their team.


In this role you will work within the Product Development team to support the launch of the teams proprietary cell technology. You will take responsibility for the mechanical design and validation of lithium-ion cells in pouch and prismatic can formats.


Responsibilities as Senior Battery Design Engineer:

  • Incorporate R&D advancements and evolving partner needs into product design changes.
  • Maintain product documentation according to company standards.
  • Coordinate with the Advanced Manufacturing team to develop mechanical cell designs that push performance barriers while maintaining manufacturability.
  • Perform design validation testing on components and assemblies.
  • Complete technical reports and communicate results to the broader team and partner organizations.
  • Design and source tools and fixtures as needed.
  • Ability to execute quickly on high visibility projects with aggressive timelines.


Requirements:

  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and validation of lithium-ion cells.
  • Familiarity with common battery manufacturing processes including ultrasonic welding, laser welding, heat sealing, etc.
  • Experience using DFMEA to identify and address risk areas early in the design phase.
  • Proficiency with 3D modelling software (Solidworks preferred).
  • Proficiency with GD&T, including tolerance stackup analysis.
  • Ability to project cell properties (e.g. capacity, energy density) from given electrode properties.


Desirable experience:

  • Pack and module design experience.
  • Experience designing cells for enhanced abuse tolerance.
