The Senior Data Engineer at Joyce University will design, develop, and implement the key workflows of data throughout the organization. You will build distributed services to support multiple teams, supporting their data consumption needs using Snowflake and DOMO, in an environment of higher education. You will provide cutting-edge, reliable, and easy-to-use systems for ingesting and processing data resulting in a better experience for faculty, students, and administration

You will build and maintain batch and real-time data flows used for business intelligence, analytics, and building up to machine learning within all organizations across Joyce This also involves storing and exposing data via a Database, Data Lake, and other APIs. This position can be fully remote for the right candidate! There would be some periodic travel to Utah for on campus meetings. This position provides no visa sponsorship and candidates must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

What You Do Everyday

  • Build out an Electronic Data Warehouse out of data in the data lake inside Snowflake.
  • Combine Nexus, Canvas, and Salesforce data with traditional web visit streams to build a full lifecycle view of students including acquisition channels through graduation.
  • Customize and optimize current data flows for consumption in DOMO, PowerBI or Tableau reporting.
  • Use existing tools and processes to deploy to integration and production environments.
  • Follow and improve the deployment processes.
  • Maintain the health of the data ecosystem by configuring monitors, defining alerts on common failure points, and giving feedback on data quality to data owners and business partners.
  • Review peer code and submit thorough and actionable feedback based on team standards and industry best practices.
  • Triage and resolve production issues. Communicate with individual business partners on status and escalate as needed.
  • Design and document data flows to optimize the pathway from source to data lake, to data warehouse to reporting platform for multiple types of data.
  • Understand the data at a deep level, apply security appropriately, and escalate as needed.
  • Work with business partners to write requirements for and ensure quality in deployed code

Requirements

WHAT YOU'VE ACCOMPLISHED:

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in the data engineering role, including data warehousing and business intelligence tools, techniques, and technology, or experience in analytics, business analysis or comparable consumer analytics solutions.
  • Undergraduate Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Finance, Statistics or related discipline or equivalent experience in ETL creation and deployment.
  • Experience in big data processing and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets. (SQL, PostgreSQL, SSRS, Hadoop, Spark, etc.)
  • Experience with tying Snowflake to various technologies (Azure Blob, Azure Data Factory, private cloud solutions, APIs, SFTP connections, etc.)
  • Knowledge and direct experience using business intelligence reporting tools. (Domo, PowerBI, Tableau, Business Objects)
  • Extensive knowledge of SQL query design and optimizing for performance and accuracy
  • Prior experience in building ETL around quarter-over-quarter, or semester-over-semester analysis including year-over-year and prior semester combined analysis a plus.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Python, R, or other data-relevant scripting languages.
  • Experience with Data Lake design and philosophy
  • Experience in an Agile/Sprint working environment preferred.
  • Proficient research skills to locate market information using numerous internal and external sources of data.
  • Experience in QA policies and procedures around data quality preferred
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills and an ability to effectively communicate with both business and technical teams.
  • Excellent understanding of the principles of Data Governance with familiarity with the needs specific to Higher Education.
  • Strong planning and organizing skills to prioritize numerous projects and ensure data is delivered in an accurate and understandable manner to the end user.
