Church Publishing Incorporated (CPI) was founded in 1918 as the Church Hymnal Corporation, a nonprofit affiliate of the Church Pension Group. Today, CPI’s professionals produce about 50 new books and resources each year, and manage a portfolio of more than 2,600 active products, many sold worldwide.

The Senior Editor will primarily acquire and edit books and content for our academic program, liturgical works program and suite of electronic resources. This position will generate ideas, reach out to potential authors, work with partners and manage submissions in line with the overall identity of the publishing house. This position will work closely with authors to develop content and shepherd projects from acquisition to publication and beyond, ensuring a successful publication defined by revenue goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned

  • Acquire and edit academic titles, series and manage liturgical works.
  • Electronic resource content development.
  • Leverage network to build a global program with scholars in religion and theology.
  • Spearhead brand growth with strategic long term planning of defined subjects, title counts and awareness. Lead academic brand identity definition.
  • Prepare necessary editorial and acquisitions packets including descriptions, selling points and comparative titles. Write copy.
  • Adhere to metadata guidelines in the presentation of information to sales accounts.
  • Edit manuscripts as needed, keeping to production and publication schedules.
  • Manage peer review process for titles.
  • Manage permissions as necessary.
  • Manage author communications, negotiating CPI needs.
  • Facilitate contractual agreements.
  • Work closely with marketing to maximize sales and build the academic brand.
  • Present at sales conferences and attend conferences and book fairs as necessary.
  • Knowledge or interest in faith-based publishing.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.

  • Experienced in acquisitions, peer review and manuscript editorial guidance.
  • Excellent communication skills—written, oral, editing, and presentation.
  • Must have market awareness and network in academic publishing.
  • Must have the ability to travel as needed.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. or B.A. required, advanced degree in related field preferred.
  • 8+ years of editorial experience in a book publishing company

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Commuting to the NY office, on average, three days a week. Extensive use of a computer keyboard is a demand of the position to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. WORK ENVIRONMENT

Hybrid (two days working from home, three days working in a standard office environment). Salary Range: $82,000 to $107,000
