Job Description
Position Summary:
This position is expected to lead Audubon’s New York City Youth Education program, which focuses on increasing knowledge and awareness about birds, other wildlife, and the natural world, inspires NYC youth to be active participants in the conservation of birds and habitats, and develop problem-solving skills needed to make informed decisions and take responsible action.
The program is currently composed of two key elements: For the Birds! (FTB!) is an experiential environmental education program for elementary school children, and LARK (Learn, Advocate, Rise-up, and Keep Conserving), a program for high school and young adults designed to increase access to conservation education in NYC for BIPOC and under resourced communities.
Reporting to the Director of Center Programs and Education and in collaboration with Community Conservation Team, the Senior Manager of the NYC Youth Education Program is responsible for all aspects of program management to include planning, developing, administering, and managing the Youth Education Programs in New York City, and ensure the program’s goals further develop young conservation leaders and provide environmental benefits in the communities we work.

Compensation
Salary range based on geo-differentials:
- $76,000-$86,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY
- $85,000-$95,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle
Essential Functions:
- Manage programs relevant to the needs of the communities we serve and engage audiences with actions and outcomes that facilitate access to green spaces and improve habitats for birds and other wildlife.
- Align with the organizational community conservation framework and engagement strategy; partner with conservation, policy, and education staff to advance our shared Flight Plan and mission.
- Ensure program content and outcomes support Audubon's mission and Strategic Plan; and grow and diversify our network.
- Supervise full-time staff, interns, fellows, seasonal hires, and contract staff as needed.
- Provide oversight for the Senior Coordinator of Education and Volunteer Outreach to develop program needs assessment, metrics, and evaluation methods.
- Responsible for raising funds to support the program in collaboration with leadership, development and finance teams.
- Maintain relationships with community members and organizations, schools, and other partners including; Student Conservation Association, NYC Service, NYC Department of Education, and NYC Parks. Represent Audubon CT/NY in relevant coalitions and working groups.
- Work with the Senior Communications Manager to incorporate program into organizational communications plans and activities and work with policy leads to ensure alignment with policy program goals, as needed.
- Report progress through quarterly reports and board updates and assist in planning/hosting quarterly meetings of the Community Conservation Board subcommittee.
- Occasionally support Audubon Center initiatives and other departments.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, education, natural science, non-profit management, environmental studies, or related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive leadership experience, including 1-2 years’ staff management in education, natural science, non-profit management, environmental studies, or related field.
- Demonstrated success in grant writing and working with diverse funding sources.
- Experience building and sustaining equitable and diverse community partnerships.
- Program management experience, including managing budgets, grants, completing reports, contracts, and other projects, as required.
- Working knowledge of educational program design and assessment of programs for diverse audiences and current knowledge and trends in environmental education.
- Ability to think strategically and creatively, while managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and operating in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Working knowledge of social media and its place within advocacy or non-profit arenas.
- Online community management and network building experience a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software required, and the ability to operate still and video camera and basic field equipment preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills, and ability to work as part of a team.
- Self-motivated and willing to work in a flexible, non-structured environment.
- Willing to work occasional evenings and weekends as the job demands.
- Ability to travel, including some overnight travel and have a valid driver's license.
