A successful candidate will play an active role in FMU's academic programs and collaborate with staff and administration to ensure students and guests are provided with opportunities and services to help them succeed.

Essential Duties

Peer Tutors work under the guidance of the Academic Skills Laboratory in the Center for Academic Resources and Support (CARS) to assist students in the areas of Mathematics, Writing and Reading. Peer Tutors are an essential part of the Academic Affairs mission to retain students through initiating, cultivating, and building relationships in our academic support safety net.

  • Assist students by providing tutoring in the subject area for which he/she is qualified.
  • Review class material with students by discussing strategies and working solutions to problems or reviewing other assignments.
  • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
  • Assess students’ progress throughout tutoring sessions.
  • Serve as a collaborative member of the CARS team.
  • Attend all required orientation session, trainings, meetings, and evaluation-related Peer Tutor duties.
  • Assist all users in the lab by answering any questions they may have, researching information or using online help, and re-directing users to the Centers for Academic Resources and Support (CARS) and/or the FMU IT department for relative solutions to problems.
  • Ensure the security of the lab (may sometimes include the opening and closing of the lab)
  • Maintain awareness of all inventory and supplies and prevent theft or destruction of hardware and software.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and overall appearance of the lab.
  • Aid students with computer-type questions regarding applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Report all hardware/software problems to the staff or FMU IT, Helpdesk to ensure quick resolution and maintenance.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as stated in the Florida Memorial University Student Handbook and those issued by Information Technology.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Report to work in a timely manner utilizing the log-in and log-out system.
  • Work independently or collaboratively
  • Maintain order in the lab at all times.
  • Demonstrate a courteous and willing disposition at all times.
  • Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and have the ability to deal effectively with all users, including students, faculty, staff, and administrative officers.
  • Effectively manage a frequently changing workload and work independently.
  • Be able to deal with situations in a calm, professional manner, and perform functions and duties in support of the Academic Affairs and CARS Studies mission.
  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Qualifications

  • Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher.
  • Must be recommended by a professor of the subject matter.
  • Must pass the PERT Test for Tutors (Math only).
  • Must be a full-time Florida Memorial University student.
  • Must be patient and have a strong desire to help students.
  • Must help students to solve problems and learn strategies; Never simply provide answers.
  • Must be friendly and courteous to all students, faculty, and staff.
  • Must be able to speak in front of groups and work well in teams.
  • Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
