Title: Tutor Coordinator

Division: Student Success

Non-Exempt, Full time

  • Position Summary

As a member of the Office of Student Success, this position is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the tutoring program and training of peer and professional tutors; working with and assisting students with online tutoring resources. The Tutor Coordinator will be responsible for general academic support, specifically tutoring and writing, as well as other success initiatives required to meet the needs of all undergraduate students at the University. In addition, the Tutor Coordinator works closely with faculty, academic advisors and the Associate Director for Student Success, to support academically at-promise students.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Tutoring Program (40%)

  • Complete trainings and certifications through National Tutoring Association
  • Recruit, hire, supervise/certify, and evaluate peer and professional tutors
  • Conduct and assess tutor trainings
  • Maintain files and generate reports on all tutors, training sessions, and statistics
  • Monitor tutor performance through mid-semester and end-of-semester individual meetings and tutor evaluation forms.
  • Work in conjunction/collaborate with faculty on issues such as: departmental recommendation of tutors, tutors in the classroom, and needs of students.
  • Research and implement expansion of tutoring services for online and graduate student populations
  • Use data to create monthly tutoring reports/track data, analyze data and provide end-of-term data summary for tutoring usage to leadership

Success & Retention Duties (30%)

  • In conjunction with the Associate Director, Student Success, develop educational and skill-building activities related to academic and personal development.
  • Maintain university-wide and college-specific knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and resources for first year students.
  • Monitors student progress and performance, analyzes problem areas, identifies trends, determines solutions and conducts intervention activities and processes for students.
  • Meet with and provide success strategies to students; manage outreach and support efforts to students with a variety of academic and personal development skills necessary to achieve student success.
  • Provide appropriate, accurate, and timely referrals for students.
  • Required to utilize the chosen university platform (Stellic) for tracking and reporting student interactions and making referrals;
  • Maintain confidentiality and understand the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Educate students on understanding University policies and procedures (emphasis on Academic policies & procedures).
  • Work collaboratively with staff and faculty across campus; refer/connect to support systems that promote overall student success.

Outreach & Engagement (25%)

  • Develop, maintain and facilitate educational resources for students, faculty & staff related to academic success and learning skills (time management, study skills, etc.)
  • Plan and implement an outreach based on the office’s strategic plan to aid in the promotion of Kokua Ike & tutoring services.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of programs in relation to retention, progression and graduation of specialized student populations, specifically Apo Haumana, but not limited to.
  • Collaborate with academic advisors & the Career Services Coordinator on workshops & presentations as requested.
  • Host workshops and informational sessions at outreach and recruitment events (Admitted Students Day, New Student Orientation, etc.)
  • Collaborate with campus partners on educational resources and opportunities related to learning development.
  • Participates in continuing education courses/modules.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

The Director from time to time may assign other duties to ensure smooth operations of the division and/or to assist with special projects as needed.

  • Education and Experience

Minimum

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, Human Resources, or other related field is required

Preferred

A Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, academic/career counseling, educational leadership, education, or another related field is preferred.

Two years of previous work experience in teaching, counseling, or administration in

Higher education.

  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with individuals at all levels of the university.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, students and community members of diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google or related software.
  • Highly organized with strong personal management skills in order to meet the needs of a dynamic environment.
  • Experience working on cross functional projects and/or teams.
  • High integrity and ethical standards.
  • Physical Requirements

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 2 0 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.

  • Other Requirements
  • This is a full time, non-exempt position. Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and have a varying schedule when required
  • Performs such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner
