Position Summary

Colorado State University invites nominations and applications for an Undergraduate Academic Advisor. This is a 12-month administrative professional position eligible for University benefits. The position will work within the College of Business within the Undergraduate Programs Office and will report to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs.

The Academic Advisor position in the College of Business Undergraduate Programs Department carries a caseload providing advisory services for Undergraduate Business Majors at Colorado State University, including concentrations in Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Finance, Financial Planning, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management and Innovation, Marketing, Real Estate, Supply Chain Management, and Sustainable Business. This position is also responsible for recruiting first year and transfer undergraduate students with an emphasis on students of color, female identified, first generation, LGBTQ , and other underrepresented groups specifically for the Business Administration major. The academic advisor is responsible for developing and facilitating COB recruiting programming on campus and in the greater community. The Academic Advisor may also supervise the College of Business Ambassador Program, co-coordinate the 1st Generation Business Summit, and/or coordinate co-curricular programming for the College of Business international Summer School Program.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the College of Business will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One or more years of experience in higher education academic advising
  • Experience working with historically underrepresented students such as ethnically/racially diverse students, first generation students, and international students, and other underrepresented populations
  • Experience with program and event development, planning, organizing, and implementation
  • Ability to work with people in both a face-to-face and remote format
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills demonstrated by cover letter and experience in public speaking
  • Ability to travel and work non-standard hours such as evenings, early mornings, and weekends

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Human Development and Family Studies, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Bilingual – Spanish
  • Two years or more of experience in higher education academic advising and/or recruiting
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with students
  • Knowledge of developmental/intrusive academic advising theory, models, and practices
  • Strong listening, paraphrasing, summarizing, and problem solving skills
  • Understanding and knowledge of higher education philosophy and practices (particularly Land Grant)
  • Conflict management and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency using technology, such as MS Office Suite, Excel and Access, and student information systems, such as Banner, Slate, and Navigate
  • Experience leading a team, including training, professional development, and mentorship
  • Understanding, passion, and strength working with people from diverse/cultural backgrounds (including international)
  • Strong customer-service skills, and ability to collaborate with multiple constituents including students, parents, faculty, and staff
  • Experience with content creation for social and print media marketing materials

Duty/Responsibility

  • Assist new students in transitioning to college; developing decision-making skills and utilizing campus resources.
  • Provide comprehensive advising to students for the first three years, focusing on transition and major exploration.
  • Challenge and support students through meetings, workshops, programs, and supervision to aid in self-discovery, concentration choice, and career planning.
  • Maintain student records, gather data for reports, and maintain detailed advising notes through our online system. Performance of advising activities regarding course selection and sequencing, registration, class schedule revisions, and class credit load recommendations, retroactive withdrawals, and academic dismissal appeals, course substitutions and overrides, and transfer credit eligibility, etc.
  • Interpret curriculum requirements, options, sequencing patterns and best practices across programs.
  • Implementation of strategic interventions with at-risk students and participate in retention and grade monitoring activities.
  • Adapt university policies and processes, advising resources, electronic databases, degree requirements, CSU Online policies and processes to students with Business majors.
  • Offer support, resources, guidance, and empathy to all students, with a particular focus on those who are under-represented, ethnically diverse, military veterans, non-traditional aged, international, parents, disabled, and beyond. Through personalized assistance, foster a nurturing environment where every student can build confidence, forge meaningful connections, and triumphantly achieve their academic and personal aspirations. Empower every individual to thrive and succeed, regardless of background or circumstance.
  • Integrate new technology and tools into a holistic advising approach.
  • Act as mentor and advocate and professionally communicate complex academic policies and resolve conflicts/issues for stakeholders.
  • Interpret, apply and enforce University and College of Business policies and procedures, as well as State and Federal laws.

  • Coordinate College of Business recruitment, retention, mentoring, international and/or diversity related student organization or program, such as but not limited to the Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program, Latinx Business Association, First Generation Business Association, Business Diversity and Leadership Alliance ( BDLA ), Business Pride, Global Business Network ( GBN ), College of Business Ambassador Program, First Generation Business Summit, International Summer School Program, etc. Potential for course instruction, depending upon programmatic needs.
  • Develop content and activities, communicate and market program, and coordinate and manage all aspects of the program.
  • Train, supervise, guide, support, and evaluate student employees.
  • Maintain website and social media channels associated with program.
  • Develop and present an annual report for each program.
  • Manage the associated program’s budget, develop and present annual budget proposal for review and approval.
  • Set and revise strategic recruitment goals with the UPO Director, ensuring alignment with CSU metrics and developing outreach for diverse populations.
  • Create and maintain messaging for prospective students with Marketing Communications and Admissions, designing content for various platforms
  • Engage in regular recruitment travel, building connections with other universities and high schools, community organizations, and at college fairs. Travel both in-state and out-of-state with occasional irregular work hours, including nights and weekends, as necessary.
  • Track and report recruitment efforts, applications, and admissions and applicable metrics to evaluate effectiveness of efforts.
  • Serve as a member of the College of Business Undergraduate admission appeals committee
  • Identify and build relationships with high schools, colleges, and organizations. Communicate and express access, value, and opportunities of a college education, specifically at CSU College of Business.
  • Collaborate with Office of Admissions and internal college and university units on recruiting related events, corporate partnerships. programs, events, high school visits, college fairs, communications, and collection and analysis of student data.
  • Initiate and collaborate on prospective student and family engagement activities, tours, and presentations serving as the first point of contact for prospective student engagement.
  • Assist with student-oriented events including Orientation, Ram Welcome, Homecoming, and Commencement.
