Salary: $18.23 - $22.43 per hour (minimum to midpoint, contingent on training and experience), plus a shift differential of $1.00 per hour for all hours worked between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am.

Schedule: 12-hour shifts, 7:00 am - 7:00 pm or 7:00 pm - 7:00 am.

Job Summary: The City of Columbia is seeking dedicated and skilled individuals for the role of Water Operator I within our Water Production Plant. This position is crucial in ensuring the proper treatment of our city’s water supply. Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor Equipment: Keep track of the operational status of vital water treatment equipment, including pump stations and wells.
  • Water Sampling and Testing: Sample water and conduct lab tests to determine water quality.
  • Plant Maintenance: Clean the water treatment plant and basins.
  • Chlorine Tank Management: Operate, test, and replace chlorine tanks as needed.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all activities and findings.
  • Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the water treatment process.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: 1 to 3 years of related experience.
  • Licenses: Valid driver’s license; must obtain a “D” level water operator’s certificate within 6 months of hire.

Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge: Familiarity with pump operation and safety standards related to water treatment.
  • Skills: Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, effective verbal communication, and active listening.
  • Abilities: Ability to read gauges, flow meters, and level sensors; sample and test water; use and maintain hand and power tools; follow oral and written instructions; and maintain focus on tasks.

Work Environment

  • Settings: Work is performed in various environments, including offices, outdoor settings, confined spaces, vehicles, shops, and chemical rooms.
  • Exposures: Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and loud noises.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and hazards.
  • May be required to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Must be able to grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, and operate mechanical equipment.
